Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
I sat atop my uncomfortable, small bed listening to the clock's music as my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the room. The creepy shadows of trees were displayed on the plain white walls. I could hear the other orphans' calm breaths synchronizing with mine. My eyes drifted to the clock as it struck 12.
It's my birthday.
I'm 18.
I smiled to myself. Fuck yeah, I'm technically an adult now...even though I kind of have the mental age of a ten-year-old. Yikes.
Not a second after that, the door creaked open and matron Sally's unimpressed eyes instantly connected with mine. She was here to tell me it was time to go, but I had already been counting the seconds.
Trying not to wake the other orphans, I got up and pulled out my small, pre-packed suitcase. I walked to the door with my suitcase rolling behind me. My stomach twisted and turned from the mixed feeling of nervousness and excitement.
We walked through the sleeping room and to the main desk, where I was officially signed out to live on my own, now that I was technically an adult. Harsh, I know.
I actually don't really mind it. I've wanted to leave this hell hole for a while now. I don't really know anyone I'd consider more than an acquaintance because I switch orphanages and schools regularly.
Even if I did make friends I'd have to leave them, so what's the point.
Friends or not, I wanted to leave as soon as possible. Plus, it's not like the matrons wanted me to stay.
"Alright miss Eleanore Davis, as of today you are no longer a resident of The Calberry Orphanage. Congratulations, your cab is outside." the desk clerk said in a bored tone.
I gave the women a dull nod and exited the orphanage. Right in front of the exit, stood my bright, yellow cab.
The trunk popped open and I walked over to it. I clumsily hurled my suitcase into the trunk and seated myself in the backseat of the taxi.
"Two lefts and a right." I say simply with a smile.
"Got it." The cab driver answered, making eye contact with me through the slightly faded car mirror.
As the taxi began to move I took a final glance at the orphanage. I won't miss it, I'll tell you that much.
Ugh. I hate thinking about my boring, pathetic ass life...
If there was one thing that could always cheer me up, it was music, I thought reaching into the pocket of my dark blue Adidas sweater. I pulled out my Sony MP3 player and turned it on.
...Yes, my MP3 player, leave me alone, it's not like I could afford an iPod.
I put in my light blue earbuds and pushed the play button. Cheap Thrills by Sia filled up the silence and almost immediately a big smile formed on my face. I shuffled my feet to the beat and before I knew it, we'd arrived.
I paid the man, got my suitcase and entered the old apartment building using my keys. My keys. I wasn't used to the way that sounded. I entered the elevator and pressed the button for the seventh floor.
Moment of truth, I thought opening the door to my apartment. I stepped into the small, empty room. The walls were colored a dull white along with dark brown wood floors and two large windows on both sides of the back wall. I closed the door and rested my back on it with a sigh.
