"Mackenzie, you promised me ever since I told you this weeks ago!"
I didn't even move from my chair I sat in, staring at my sister, Melissa. Her foot was tapping against the floor impatiently. She was obviously very annoyed with me at the very moment. Both of us were getting at each other about something for the past twenty minutes ever since she came over to the fire station I work at once school was done for her.
"Mels. I told you a million times, it all depends on work and right now, there's no way I can take you to that signing in an hour! Who knows what calls we will be getting and I can't risk the chance." One day awhile ago, she comes running into house, completely out of breath with a big smile on her face. And whenever Melissa has that smile on her face, there's something up.
Out of all of the things in the world, a signing. Hockey. Chicago Blackhawks. I don't blame her for wanting to go to this one after many tries in the past just to get to one. My family was always busy with something and it just never happened for my sister.
"Oh come on, Mack! I promise you it will not take forever. Please just this one time?" Melissa gave me her puppy dog look as best as she could to convince my decision that wasn't changing. She does a good job with the face, but it doesn't work on me at all. But it does with other people.
I shook my head, clarifying nothing is going to change from this point onward in time.
From behind, someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around in the chair I sat in to look at my co-worker and EMT partner, Sydney. I gave her a confused look, raising my eyebrow and everything to figure out what was up with her.
"We aren't going to miss anything, Mackenzie. You know we can take calls over the radio away from here. right?"
Oh great, she's siding with my sister. I rolled my eyes and turned back around to face Melissa. She was jumping up and down with excitement when Sydney had her own opinion on this situation. It clearly was going to overrule my decision.
"Fine. But you're lucky you got her," I pointed back at Sydney, "on your side because she knows what's up most of the time. More than me." She's older than me by a margin of eight years. Even if Melissa isn't her sister, she'll do anything for my sister more than I would do for that bratty child.
Melissa skipped right on out into the garage like a five year old, not waiting for the two of us. The excitement was well beyond the limits within her.
"Come on now, Mack," Sydney said, wrapping a arm around my shoulder as we made our way out. "I bet you your sister isn't going to ask for any more favors in the future. This is something she always wanted to go to and now, she's going."
"Trust me, you don't know anything. Melissa will come on back asking for something else that will cause me to pull out all of my hair in a matter of seconds. She's very needy for a teenaged girl her age, I wasn't even like that growing up!" No wonder why nobody thinks we are related to each other. My sister and I are completely opposite personality wise and everything. That's what throws a lot of people off.
I drove, Sydney ended up staying in the back of the ambulance, giving her seat up on the passenger side to Melissa. My sister and I didn't even speak one word to each other the whole entire trip. No "how was your day?" or anything like that. We were dead silent. I guess our little bickering fight earlier wore us out maybe?
"Where's this signing at?" I asked, my full attention ahead on the road.
"United Center," Melissa replied.
My eyes grew wide. Thinking about it, I bet it's going to be packed there. It's a big place and many fans are going to come. Why not? I know a lot of people who like hockey in Chicago. Some of the fire fighters I work along side with are huge fans.
