"All units. Structure fire..."

I groaned at the sound of the radio as I was still half asleep. I didn't even know what time it was. I hope I haven't been in Patrick's room too long....

I slowly opened my eyes, seeing it was still dark outside through the window of Patrick's hospital room. What time is it? It had to be really late at night, maybe like eleven o'clock or something?

My eyes flickered over to Patrick. He was still fast asleep and didn't seem like he was disturbed by my radio going off, either. That was good, Patrick needed all of the sleep he needed. He still looked pretty banged up from the accident and I only sighed, feeling bad that it happened to him.

This meant I had to leave Patrick. I didn't want to wake him up to let him know, but I just don't want to leave without him knowing. Maybe I could get back to the hospital in time before he wakes up... But who knows?

I took a few moments to snuggle up into Patrick's side carefully, spending the last moments before I left to go out on a call. I missed his presence so much... I didn't want to leave, and I knew Patrick didn't want me to leave even though he was asleep. I couldn't leave Sydney waiting for me down at the ambulance.

Syd. I'm surprised she didn't come up to the room and get me to leave before I fell asleep for a little bit. We aren't even supposed to stay at the hospital to stay with the people we save, it's against the rules.

"Took you long enough to wake up."

I gasped in fear and surprise at the extra person in the room. My attention went from Patrick to the chair next to the bed to see Jonathan Toews sitting there. He looked tired as if he stayed up for days on end.

"Was I asleep that long?" I asked, obviously groggy just by the sound of my voice.

Jonathan only shrugged in response. "It's midnight." So I've been asleep for the past seven hours... "Why are you here at the hospital? Aren't you on duty?"

"Yeah," I said with guilt in my voice as I was neglecting my job. "I...um was the one who brought Patrick to the hospital. I wasn't expecting to stay so long, he wanted me to stay for a bit and the stay ended up being longer than I anticipated."

"Well I'm glad you stayed," he said. "Patrick has been talking about you nonstop for a long time, and he ended up feeling under the weather when supposively you two haven't talked to each other for awhile. He just lights up when he brings you up in conversations."

My cheeks grew hot when Jonathan mentioned that. He really did talk about me to his teammates, huh? I thought he would've hated me since I avoided him for awhile now.

"He needed you, Mackenzie."

I wanted to say 'I know', but I ended up to a little head nod in response to Patrick's teammate.

"You should get going. Your job is calling your name. I'm going to stay here for a little bit to watch Pat, I'll make sure to tell him that you'll be back."

"Thank you," I said and gently got off the bed, making sure I didn't wake up Patrick. I quickly looked back at the bed, seeing that he didn't stir a bit when I moved. I said a soft 'goodbye' to Jonathan and then walked out of the room. I didn't bother to look back in the room to know that I'll be seeing the two, or just Patrick, later on.

I made my way all of the way back down to the main level of the hospital and then walked out of the big building to see the ambulance parked in the first row of the parking lot. I didn't know what Sydney's reaction would be when she finally sees me for the first time since bringing Patrick.
