The next morning wasn't my friend. I had to wake up early, earlier than usual. Last night, I barely even slept because there were so many things roaming through my head and it bugged me oh so badly.
Melissa woke up late this morning. She was going to be late to school and there was a possibility that I was going to be late to work. I waited for over a half an hour just for her to wake up. Instead, I had to be her alarm clock.
Both of us were under the weather for the day, hence both of us being pretty much tired. On our way to Melissa's school, we didn't even say a single word to each other at all. The radio wasn't on full blast like every time in the past where we would sing at the top of our lungs to every song that played.
We finally arrived to her school after what it seemed like a very long drive. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched Melissa grab her backpack from the back seat and get out of the car. "Hey you, have a good day at school," I spoke out before she closed the passenger door on me.
"Of course, mom," Melissa smiled a bit. "I have hockey practice right after school and I'm going to go home with Kayla after practice so we can work on homework with each other. I'll see you at home tonight."
"Okay, fine by me," I said.
Melissa closed the passenger door and turned around and started to walk towards the entrance of her school. I didn't stay long to watch her walk inside, I'm already late as it is to work and my drive to the firehouse is going to be a long one.
To be exact, I'm fifteen minutes late to work. And for sure I am going to get a lot of crap for being late without a great excuse. I can't blame Melissa because none of the firefighters or Sydney will believe me if I said that. I guess my excuse is that I slept in.
I walked inside the firehouse to see that everyone was already eating breakfast in the kitchen. Some ate at the small round table while others sat at the bar nearby the stove. None of them even took notice of me walking inside until the door behind me slammed closed. Everyone of the firefighter's heads turned towards me.
"Good morning to you all," I waved, a little embarrassed. I hoped that I could've gotten passed all of them without any disturbance. "You boys can point and whisper among each other about me because I'm late. Go on ahead." I continued on to walk towards the locker rooms just around the corner from the kitchen.
None of them seemed to care about my tardiness for once ever since I started to work here. It's possible that after I'm changed into my work uniform, I will get some sort of feedback from all of them. Possibly no breakfast? It could happen, though.
I started to open up my locker. Here and there, I kept messing up on the locker combination and I didn't get the lock to unlock after four tries.
"Geez, it seems like you're having a lot of trouble there, Mackenzie."
I looked off to the side to see Sydney just walking out of the bathrooms on the other side of the locker rooms. She had a small smirk on her face, too.
"Rough morning," I yawned and then started to take my sweatshirt off, leaving me in only my sports bra and sweatpants. "I wasn't the one who overslept either." I grabbed my navy blue long sleeved shirt that hung up in my locker and slowly put it on over my head.
"Typical teenagers," Sydney said. She sat down on the bench right in front of the lockers that aligned up against the wall. I nodded in agreement as I was making an attempt to put my pants on. This problem always happened every single time with these pants. This is a sign that I am in need of bigger pants or I should just lose the weight. For a size one, that's funny.
Sydney and I walked into the kitchen minutes later and took a seat at the bar. In my favor, there was still breakfast left over just for me. Some eggs were still on the frying pan and the pancakes and strips of bacon were covered in a paper towel on a paper plate. My stomach growled pretty loudly, everyone in this room had to be able to hear my stomach with no problem. Thankfully no one even heard. Sydney probably heard, but she didn't look at me.
