[before we start, sorry I haven't posted in about 2 years I found the next chapters in my notes so thought I should post it!!! Also I started these chapters in first person, and it's too long for me to change it, so yeah!]

We gathered round the dining room table. No words uttered from our mouths - there was nothing to say: Patricia is dead. I kept repeating that sentence in my head, over and over again, trying to make some sense of it. My mind wasn't in the right place, my thoughts scattered everywhere, but one sticking out more than others: what now?

Finally, someone broke the silence. "What in God's name is going on? What abomination of nature was that thing?" Dad said, with anger seeping out through his facial expressions. He tried to cover up the fact that he was sad, but it was impossible to not notice the tears forming in his eyes, creating a shiny, wax-like layer over them. "The world's ending. I mean, it has to be. That was no man - that was a monster." Maggie added. She was right too, there was no other explanation for how a dead man started walking and killed Patricia. This is how the world ends, and it hasn't even gotten to the worst part. "This is the start, not many people have gotten infected yet, and my bet is, that in 6 months time over 3/4 of the population will be infected." I started to talk about the apocalypse because I wanted to get my mind off Patricia. If I have a motive, a goal, it will be much easier for me to move on from her. My goal? To try to save this damned world. I have to stop being that innocent farm girl, dependant on a boy to save her like a damsel in distress. I have to change.

"Beth, grab me some whiskey from the cabinet in the kitchen?" I think what dad was trying to say was 'Let's just give up, drown our sorrows in cheap alcohol and let them kill us'. I wasn't going to have any of that. This is not what Patricia would have wanted us to do.

"No."

"What? Just fetch me the whiskey and stop being a hormonal teenager."

"No, dad. We're not doing this. We're not doing the whole 'I'm sad, lets drink until we get alcohol poisoning'. We're going to be strong, for Patricia. And if not for her, then for the whole world's sake. Did you not see what happened out there? There are roamers, out to get us. If we do not get the preparations done now, what happened to Patricia will happen again. We need to reinforce the fences around the barn, get all the food we can salvage, gather every weapon we can find. This is how we have to live now. Survival is the only thing that matters now."

"Get over yourself, kid."

"Dad, I agree with her. We need to start now, before it's too late. If you don't want to help, that's your choice." Maggie backed me up; it's always good to know she has my back.

"Fine," He stands up slowly, groaning. "what do we need to do?".

"Let's start with that fence."
