essential things
i was sixteen when i loved you,
seventeen when i left you.even now,
i miss your kisses,
i miss your words;
do you know that i still have
the shirt you gave me
all those years ago?yesterday,
in class,
i learned about the heart.my love for you
used to break the boundaries
of human anatomy,
but now that i understand that
i don't love you anymore,
it is safe to say that
a heart is essential—
it gives blood to the needed parts of my body and beats a steady drum in my temples and has a special place in it for people that i love.but you were not
my everything,
nor could you ever be,
and i had to learn this.the hardest part of loving you
was saying goodbye,
because although i will always remember you—
your smiles and soft gazes and gorgeous laughs—
my heart will no longer find you
essential.—lana
