"Are we gonna get expelled Liam?" Zayn asked nervously. He'd been in trouble before at other schools but never expelled. Zayn daren't admit it, but he was scared.
"You won't be. I might..." Liam replied.
The two boys sat outside Headmistress Tarrant's office on two old, rickety, wooden chairs. They'd both been told to wait here until they were called in.
"Wouldn't be the first time anyway." Zayn gave Liam a shocked look.
"What do you mean it wouldn't be the first time?" Zayn questioned Liam. Liam sighed before explaining.
"In high school... I was bullied. Severely." Liam looked at Zayn to see if he was laughing. This was the first time Liam had spoken to anyone about the bullying aside from his family. Zayn just sat quietly, looking at him with his full attention. Liam carried on.
"I was bullied, and one day I retaliated. I was only year 8 but this year 11 had been picking on me for ages. Stealing my bag, throwing it over the building, getting other kids to do stuff to me... so I went up to him and punched him. Pretty much like today." Zayn was sat with his eyes wide and an understanding look on his face. He reached across and put a hand on Liam's shoulder. Liam looked up from the floor and stared into Zayn's eyes.
"I won't let you get expelled Liam." Zayn gave him a re-assuring look, and Liam smiled.
"You're a true friend Zayn." Liam said just as Headmistress Tarrant stepped out of her office. The look on her face was one of disappointment.
"Step into my office boys." She sighed, the two boys following her back in. She directed her hand to the two chairs in front of her desk and the boys each took a seat.
"I don't know what to say." Tarrant stood behind her desk and the tone to her voice hinted annoyance. "I just didn't expect this from you two." Liam quickly stepped in.
"Headmisstress, if you punish anyone, punish me. Zayn had nothing to do with it. It was me." Tarrant nodded her head and slowly sat.
"Tell me what happened then. The story I heard may be biased." Liam glanced at Zayn who looked determined to not speak. Liam breathed in and then continued.
"Me and Zayn were walking on the playground when some second years made racist comments to Zayn. I asked them to apoligise and they refused to and... and I punched him." Liam's tone reduced more and more towards the end, showing his shame in himself at punching another student and being back in an office again. Liam had swore to himself he wouldn't let anyone push his buttons and he'd already failed himself.
"So Zayn had nothing to do with it?" Headmisstress Tarrant asked.
"No." Liam said before Zayn could interrupt. Tarrant nodded.
"Well your story is different to the one I heard. I heard Zayn made comments to the second years and there were no racist terms exchanged." Liam shook his head.
"I swear to you miss, I'm telling the truth." Tarrant raised her hand.
"I know Mr Payne... problem is two of my top students are in my office. What do I do? Do you see my problem here?" Zayn felt like he had to speak then.
"Miss, Liam was only trying to get the boys to apoligise to me. I tried to stop him but Liam... he just wanted to make a point, that's all."
"Yes but making a point and punching a second year square in the face is different, isn't it Mr Malik?" Zayn looked down at his lap, slightly embarassed. After a long moment of silence, Tarrant made her decision.
"Zayn, you're free to go. I will make sure the second year apoligises to you." Zayn gave Liam an uneasy look and slowly rose out of his chair.
"Thank you miss." He whispered as he walked out the office. Tarrant waited till the door was shut before speaking again.
"Liam, I want you to apoligise to the second year. You may see it as only a punch but your power makes your punches ten times more dangerous, and I know what you're capable of. You could've severely injured him."
"Yes miss." Liam uttered, staring at his fists.
"I've also decided to take you off the programme." Liam's looked up in shock, eyes wide. "If this is the behaviour you're going to display in your first term of school then I don't believe you should be so privelleged to be trained for... to be on the programme." Tarrant carefully chose her words as to not reveal what the programme was about. "I could expel you, and trust me if you were a different student I just might. Thing is I know you can do well Liam. If you can prove it to me, I may put you back on the programme, but for now you're not to attend any more sessions. Do I make myself clear?" Liam, slightly in shock, managed a nod.
"Good, now leave my office and I don't ever want you in here again. Understood?"
"Yes miss." Liam spoke before scurrying out of the room that made him feel so small and intimidated.
