Evan walks down the hallway, his books held against his chest. His backpack weighs down on his shoulders as he approaches his locker.
But before he can reach for the lock, he's shoved against the cold metal. His books fly out of his hands, landing on the floor with his papers flying everywhere.
A devilish voice laughs from behind him. "It's what you deserve, faggot."
Evan drops to his knees to pick up his materials, ignoring the laughs and the burning of tears in his eyes.
"Hey! Fuck off!" The strong voice of Evan's boyfriend fills his ears. "Get out of here."
Connor drops down to the ground, collecting all the leftover books. "Are you okay, Ev?"
"I'm fine." Evan insists, standing and throwing his books in his locker.
"Hey, hey." Connor coos, holding Evan back from running away. He holds his cheeks, wiping the tears streaming down his porcelain skin. "Are you hurt?"
Evan shakes his head, closing his eyes. "No."
"Don't listen to him, baby."
"He called me a faggot." Evan shutters, the couple ignoring the bell ringing, signaling he start of fourth period.
"I know. Do you want me to beat him up?"
"No." Evan shakes his head. "No, it's okay." He grabs his bag from the floor, throwing it over his shoulder. "I gotta get to math."
"Hey, wait." Connor grabs Evan's hand, pulling him back so they can kiss.
Evan smiles, appreciating the warm feeling the engulfs his body. He runs down the empty hallway and into his math class.
"He was with his stupid boyfriend."
Oh right, he's in this class. And he sits right behind Evan.
"Shut up, stupid." Zoe snaps, and the class oohs and ahhs.
"Class, that's enough. Evan, please take your seat. I won't make you get a pass."
Evan nods, hurrying to his seat. Evan could feel him lean closer to his seat. "Did you have fun fucking your crackhead boyfriend in the closet?"
Evan tightens his jaw, trying his best to brush off the comment. But he kept going, spitting homophobic words and insulting Evan and Connor.
Eventually, Evan got fed up. Leaving his backpack and books at his seat, he storms out of the room.
Evan goes to the one place he can think of; the orchard.
-----
"Hey, where's Evan?" Connor asks as he approaches his lunch table.
"Haven't seen him all day." Alana shrugs.
"Thought he was with you. He always is, anyway." Jared responds.
Zoe stares down at her book, avoiding her brothers cold stare. "Zoe?"
She sighs. "Jake was saying some rude stuff in math today. Evan just stormed out of class. Left all his books there too."
"Evan stormed out?!" Connor exclaims, his eyes widening. "No, no, no."
-----
"I just need to go higher." Evan informs himself, reaching for the next branch.
Tears are pouring down Evan's cheeks, and his hands are beyond sweaty. But Evan keeps climbing, higher and higher.
He shutters as he looks down, realizing just how high up he is.
