CHAPTER 2
I find Peetas hand at his side and tangle our fingers together tightly as flashbacks return to my mind from the previous games every second we stand in this elevator. Once the doors open Peeta and I step foot into the pent house. I take in a deep breath only to breathe in the horrifying familiar smells of tears and lost dreams. I grip Peetas hand tighter to steady myself from falling over.
"Hey," Peeta whispers into my ear. "are you alright?" he asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I assure him with a shaky voice that can almost pass as 'okay'.
We slowly walk into the sitting room where are tributes await us on the leather couches. The girl and boy sit fairly close to each other as they pin their eyes to the ground shaking. Once they sense our presence their heads shoot straight up. The girls expression resembled Prims when they called her name. The boys expression however resembled Peetas.
"Hello." Peeta says. "I am Peeta Mellark and this is Katniss Everdeen. We will be your mentors. I can assure you, that both Katniss and myself, will do our up most to get one of you out alive."
The fact that Peeta said one of you sends chills up my spine. The thought that one of these kids or none will survive sickens me. Even though I agreed to this.
"Katniss." Peeta softly nudges my shoulder.
"What?" I ask.
"Would you like to say something?" Peeta asks.
I nod slightly. I step away from Peeta so that I don't look like I'm about to faint, but as soon as I do I regret it. I feel myself slip away as I tip towards the ground. I immediately straighten my back and stand up properly. I take Peetas arm to steady myself again only not so close this time. I clear my throat hoping that what just happened wasn't as noticeable. Okay maybe I shouldn't say anything. I shake my head slightly then tug at Peetas arm, indicating that I need to go now.
"Your stylists will be with you shortly to prepare you for the Opening Ceremony." Peeta says.
"Good luck." I manage to say before Peeta pulls me away into the hallway.
"Are you sure your okay, Katniss?" Peeta asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just need to lie down." I say.
"Okay, I'll take you to your room." Peeta says.
He leads me into my room and lays me down gently on my bed. Peeta tucks me in and starts to leave but I grab his wrist. "Peeta." I manage to say.
Peeta smiles and goes to the other side of the bed. He climbs into the bed and pulls me into his chest. I rest my head on his left arm as his right arm is wrapped securely around my waist. I fall asleep with steady beat of Peetas heart in my ear.
