Whrn everyone was gone and away from the picnic except for Poppy and Branch, Branch couldn't help but flash back, in his mind, when Poppy had kissed him.

Was it on purpose? Did she actually like him?

No. That's impossible. Creek was right. No one loves me.

"Poppy?" Branch asked.

"Yes?" she responded quickly, tossing some leftover bread to the birds in the trees.

"I, um...."

He didn't say anything for a minute. Poppy gave him a strange look, but then slowly made her way over to him. "What is it?" she asked.

He shook his head. "Nevermind."

Now she was the one to shake her head. "Just tell me."

They stared at each other for a minute. Branch put his hands on top of Poppy's, that were resting on the ground. She kissed his cheek, then rested her head on his shoulder. He rested his head on hers.

Poppy smiled. Branch smelled like blueberries.

Branch didn't know what he was doing, but he didn't do anything to stop it. Instead, he, too, smiled.

But neither lf them knew that someone was watching them.

And they weren't happy with them.
