Chapter 17:

(Sophie's POV)

"Show me Fitz Vacker."

Ren's imparter flashes green as she holds it close to her face.

Then Fitz's face appears on the screen. His hair is ruffled and it appears as if he's wearing the same tunic I last saw him in when we were taking the cognate test.

I shudder at the memory.

His teal eyes narrow. "Who are you and how were you able to hail me?"

Ren chuckles. "Easy there, Vacker. I'm Ren, and I'm sure that you're not interested on how I was able to hail you." Her dull and surprisingly scary voice stays steady.

"Well Ren, as a matter of fact I am interested. But lucky for you I'm busy right now. So...bye."

"Wait!" Fitz stays on, clearly annoyed.

"What? And make it quick."

"Your girlfriends here, and she really needs you right now."

Ren holds out the imparter right in front of me. "Ren! He's not my boyfriend!" Meanwhile, Fitz is speechless.

She rolls her eyes. "Isn't he one of them? I thought you had two boyfriends!" I sigh, proud of myself for not blushing like how my fourteen year old self would do.

"I have one boyfriend. His name is Keefe Sencen. And, why are we talking about this? The Neverseen is on the loose!"

"Say whatever you want..." Ren mutters before Fitz clears his throat, still on the imparter screen. His face is bright red.

"Um...Sophie! Where have you been! I was-I mean, we were all worried sick! Did you get the letter the council sent?"

When I meet Fitz's eyes, shame washes over me. And I look away. "Yeah, I did. Can you come over? And I'm not in Havenfield. Use your leapmaster and go to Stargaze."

"Stargaze? Is that Ren's home? And who is she anyways? Why is she wearing a black cloak?"

"Listen." This time I do look at him straight in the eye. "Yes, that is her home. And she's my friend. And trust me, she's not part of the Neverseen. Just come over."

"Okay, fine. I'll be right there." And the imparter's screen clicks off.

"Finally!" Ren mumbles as she stuffs the gadget back inside her cloak's pocket. "My arm was getting tired of holding the screen up to your face!"

"Aw, poor you." I smirk. Ren shoves me, but still manages to grin back.

"You're just lucky I'm so nice to you. I usually never smile and joke around..."

"Well, that's nice. Thanks for hailing Fitz, by the way."

"You're welcome. Come, follow me to the leapmaster. We could wait for him there."

Ren gestures me to follow her, and we both head past the the sofas and up the huge staircase in the middle of the humongous living room.

Soon we're standing in front of the platform of her leapmaster, in the dark.

"Why don't you turn on the lights?" I faintly can make out Ren shrugging.

"It's nice in the dark. And you look terrible by the way. Your hair has dirt in it, and leaves. And there's bruises on your neck and cuts on your hands."
