(Fitz's POV)
Yes! Sophie got me!
Sophie turns a bit pink, probably nothing compared to the shade on my face.
Seven minutes in a closet. What a weird human game. I transmit, trying to act casual.
Yeah, I know...
"Hurry up and get in the closet already!" Ren says, pushing us both into the direction of her closet door.
I can see Tam snickering in the background.
"Okay, okay! But who's timing us? And what are you guys going to do in the meantime?" Sophie asks.
Dex holds up a weird, flat squared gadget. "I got a timer right here. And don't worry about us, we're just going to talk to Ren and get to know her better."
Keefe frowns at me, then looks over to Sophie. "Call me if anything weird happens, Foster."
Sophie laughs dryly, and then we're pushed inside a dark room.
"Have fun..." Ren chuckles evilly before slamming the door shut. I can hear her lock the door from the outside.
"Soo..." I mumble. The room was pitch black, except for a sliver of light coming in from the door. Muffled chatter could be heard from our friends.
(Bold is Fitz, Italics is Sophie)
Let's talk telepathically incase anyone decides to eavesdrop.
I nod, even though I can tell she won't be able to see. I hear a bit of shuffling, and then a bang.
Sophie? Sophie.
Relax Fitz. I just tripped over a pile of clothes, and fell. That's it.
I laugh, and Sophie stays quiet.
What are you thinking about?
Nothing.
I run a hand through my hair, and walk forward, trying to find my way to Sophie. The pull from our cognate rings strengthen, and snap as I sit next to what looks like a lump sitting on a pile of clothes.
Sophie, don't tell me it's nothing. I can tell what you're thinking.
And I can. Even though we are not full cognates, I am able to enter her mind whenever I want, without even trying. At this point permission is not necessary since we able really supposed to have no secrets.
Sophie squeezes my hand, and I see a thousand thoughts racing through her mind. But most of all, I see the memory of me showing her the fight I had with Keefe. I see Tiergan being drugged, and carried away. I see hundreds of memories, of her watching the Neverseen harm our friends, including me.
Fitz, you don't realize that this is all my fault don't you? Before I even came, all of your lives were completely normal. Safe. I caused wars, Fitz. An innocent elf might be dead right now because of me! I ruined your friendship with Keefe, and his with Dex! There's a reason why people are afraid of me. And I'm the reason why people worry! I'm always getting hurt, and I'm always being sent to Elwin! And now everyone is going to expect me to defeat the neverseen, again, since we all know the council won't. And I can't! I can't because know I don't know how to, and now who knows what the Neverseen are doing because I escaped! And we failed! We failed the cognate test because I refused to trust you, and now the whole Elvin population knows, and its so embarrasing. It's all MY FAULT!
