Chapter 22:
(Fitz's POV)
"Thanks." I mumble to Ren, before stepping onto the Leap Master. "HAVENFIELD!"
--------------
I arrive, and hastily make my way to the front door. And unfortunately, it is locked. "Hello? Grady? Edaline? OPEN UP!"
This can't be happening. I need to see her one last time.
I pound on the door, tears streaking down my face. "She can't... She..."
"FITZ! FIIIIIITZ!" Elwin comes running up to me, but I'm too busy trying to open the front door. He yanks me back. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING BOY? HAVE YOU GONE WILD OR WHAT?"
I slightly tremble. "N-no...So-Sophie...she's..."
Elwin's face softens. "Fitz....she wouldn't want this. Please listen to me. I'll take you back to Everglen so you can get cleaned up and maybe after you can...visit...her." He chokes up slightly.
"But...Elwin...She's...ITS HIS FAULT! RUY! THE NEVERSEEN THEY CAN'T GET AWAY-"
Elwin's grip on me tightens. "LISTEN. YES SHE'S BROKEN. AND YOU SHOULD NOT LOSE HOPE. THESE TIMES HAVE CHANGED VACKER. NO MORE HAPPY ELVIN LAND. WE'RE GOING THROUGH WAR. YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT IT! ITS BEST TO LEAVE GRADY AND EDALINE ALONE FOR THE MOMENT."
I clench my jaw as Elwin holds up a crystal to the light of dawn.
-------
"Candleshade?" I whisper. The huge structure looms before us, it's windowless towers making me frown.
"But...this is Keefe's home..." My heart is still beating rapidly.
"Indeed." Elwin pats my back, handing me what appears to be a bottle of youth and a healing elixir out of his satchel. I take it, fingers trembling. "Keefe's in there. He left after you left. I thought it was a good idea that you two stay together, since you've been best friends since...since forever, as far as I know." He smiles sadly.
I shake my head. "No, we're not friends. Take me back to Havenfield. Please."
Elwin backs away, holding up another crystal. "Talk to him Fitz. He might might be going through the same thing too. We all are."
"What?" I scowl. "Where are you going?"
"To check on...Sophie...Take care, Fitz." Elwin quickly looks away as the light reflecting off his crystal carries him to Havenfield.
"Wha-Wait!" I swallow hard, wiping the sweat off my hands.
You've got to be kidding me.
-----------
"Where's your parents?"
Keefe and I are sitting on his family's dining room table. Balefire dimly lights the room.
"They're still sleeping." I nod slightly, blanking out.
Keefe shakes his head, burying his face in his arms. "Fitz, I am so sorry."
I close my eyes, basking in the silence. "Me...too."
We sit there for a few seconds. My mind eventually strays to my father...but that's the least of my worries.
Keefe sits up, his face solemn. "I am the worst elf in the universe and you know it. She knows it."
"You can't lie to a telepath." I mumble, lifting the bottle of youth Elwin gave me to my lips.
He stares long and hard at me. "You're not allowed to read my mind. And anyways its true."
I put the bottle down. "Wrong again."
"Okay so why did we start ignoring or acting rude to each other lately? Everything has a reason. I am that reason. I was selfish. And look what happened." Keefe looks down, playing with his fingers.
The room suddenly feels heavier.
"It's no one's fault. And us...it was me. She chose you and I couldn't accept it." I whisper.
I hear laughing, and look up. "Keefe? You're laughing? Seriously?"
He leans on his chair, eyes glinting with pain. "Yes. Yes I am. I'm thinking how it all came to this. In one week Fitz! One week. We were acting like jerks that day. Over a girl! Can you believe it? That's not us. Even if it was over Sophie. That was not us."
I feel myself grin. "Yeah. We were total selfish elves. You know what? Sophie made her own choice and I'm now one hundred percent fine with you dating her. I know she's lucky to have you Keefe."
Keefe's smile falls and I realize that Sophie's mind is...
Yeah.
"Fitz. Fitz. You alright?" Keefe says.
I nod.
"You'll fix her. I know you can. If she was able to do it with Alden, there's no doubt that you'll be able to do it too." He sniffs.
"Keefe?"
"Yeah?"
I hold out my hand out to him. It's covered in dried blood, but I guess it doesn't matter. "We made a mistake. But it's all in the past now. Friends?"
Keefe narrows his eyes at my outstretched hand. "No."
I feel my heart sink. "Wait...what? I manage to choke out.
He laughs lightly, pulling me into a hug. "Not friends. But brothers."
"Now you're just being weird." I laugh, backing away.
"Yup. I know." Keefe quietly chuckles. "And I know just the thing we should do next, as brothers."
"And what is that?"
He leans over, and I can see tears forming in his eyes. "We find a way to fix Foster."
Dread mixed with sadness fills my body at the reminder of Sophie.
But Elwin and Keefe are right. Hope is still not lost. Look at my father.
"Yes. Yes we should. You know what? Let's start now."

Yeah, let's start now and find a way INTO YOUR DOOM. Jk. Ughhh I cringe so hard when rereading my writing!! Anyone feel the same? Anyways I'm glad Keefitz is back together again. (Yes I call it keefitz) Okay...soo...BYE.
