Midnight Starlight

Chapter 8

Kendall walked into the large dining room after Rex and looked around. There was a very long table in the middle of the room that had a chair on each end and all together there were fourteen chairs with six chairs on each side of the table and one on each end. The table was a dark brown color and the chairs were the same with purple and gold paisley markings. Two very large chandeliers hung from the ceiling and shone brightly in the room. Kendall looked at the room in amazement and heard Rex say, a little laugh before speaking,

"This is the dining room, obviously. You look astonished slightly."

    Kendall nodded and heard a bell sound. It wasn't very loud to human ears but wolf ears would hear it perfectly. One by one, people of the pack walked in and sat in a chair. Every chair was filled in except one, which was right next to Xavier and Rex. Rex gesture and said

"This is your seat Kendall."

Kendall sat down and saw everyone, including Iris, Alec, and Hunter. When she looked at Hunter, he looked her way too and made a little grin. Kendall smiled slightly and waved a little. Derek stood at his chair on the end and smiled to everyone. He made a hang gesture and a few butlers came in with plates of food. What was being served was a wide variety of cooked vegetables, two whole baked chickens, and a boar.

   Everyone was finished after about an hour and a half and everyone left the table to go to bed. Rex waited for Kendall at the door way to the living room and asked

"Did you get enough to eat? I know you like to eat a lot."

  Kendall laughed slightly and punched Rex in the arm, playfully with a smile, and said

"Yes, I did, surprisingly. That boar tasted amazing. "

   Rex smiled, starting to walk away, and said

"Well that's good, but since everyone is going to sleep, let me show you where you'll be sleeping at."

   Kendall followed Rex down the same hall that Rex's room was to a room on the end the had a name plate on it but no name. Rex smiled at Kendall as he opened the door and walked into the room, Kendall right behind him. Kendall looked around the room, the walls a fawn color and the bedspread and pillows a creamy color. The bed was in the middle of the room, the head of the bed against the wall with a nightstand with a lamp on it nest to the bed.

   Rex turned to face Kendall, a few feet away, and said

"Its not much but its a spare room here."

   Kendall looked at the mahogany dresser on the other side of the bed, under a window, and then looked at Rex with a smile. She said

"Thank you, Rex."

   Rex nodded with a smile and began to walk out of the room as Kendall climbed into bed.

"If you need anything, I'll be in my room right next door."

   Kendall covered herself in the blanket as Rex was closing the door. She sat up on her elbow and said

"Hey Rex..um..can I ask you something..?"

   Rex opened the door slowly and walked back in the room, slightly with a nod. Kendall looked at the ground them back to Rex. She bit her lip slightly and asked

"You know..uh..I can't really sleep without my dog since I've had him for some years."

  Rex just stood there, a sort of blank look on his face. Kendall blinked a few times and covered her face with her hand, in embarrassment, thinking it was very stupid and awkward to ask that. After a few minutes, Kendall heard a slight panting and a small bark. She uncovered one of her eyes and saw the mutt she had always come to known. She made a small smile and Rex jumped up on the bed next her and cuddled up next to her. They were both silent for a minute, the only light source, the lamp, and Rex said, his rough voice, quiet,

"I know how you feel Kendall, I'm can't sleep without my human. To admit, I stayed up almost the whole night every time you had a sleep over at one of your friends' house."

   Kendall made a small laugh and put one arm under her head and the other over Rex. She smiled softly and closed her eyes. Rex smiled as well and they both drifted off to sleep.
