Ken sighed. After two years of counseling and three more years of Hide basically being her wingman for a change, she finally had a boyfriend. Not a person she'd have expected, but it had worked out fine.
"When do you finish tonight?" Ayato asked, leaning over the counter and glaring at one of her coworkers.
"11. I'm closing up," Ken said, and both of them tensed slightly.
"Cool. I'll hang around then."
Ken raised her eyebrows. "It's 8."
"I'll take a nap." Ayato went and took the corner table bag was slightly tucked away from the others and laid his head on the table, watching Ken work as a new customer came in. Most nights when Ken worked late, Ayato showed up to walk her back to the apartment she shared with Hide. Part of it was his duty as a boyfriend. Part of it was guilt.
If I'd just stayed late with her that night...
He shook his head. No point in dwelling on a past Ken was already over. At least, she said she was over it. He just hoped that was the case, for her sake.
He pretended to fall asleep, but he lefts his eyes open a slit so he could keep watching Ken. She was pretty in a reserved, un-flashy way, and that made him like her even more.
He must have ended up taking a nap anyway, because he woke up to Ken shaking his shoulder just after 11.
"You awake yet?" she asked, smiling.
Ayato couldn't tell if it was real. He hoped it was. He pulled a cranky face before nodding. "Yep, all rested up." He got up and pushed his chair in, not because he was one of those kinds of people but because he knew Ken would have to push it in if he didn't since she was closing up.
Then he took her hand and led her outside, waiting for her to lock the door.
Ken turned and put her hand over her mouth, laughing.
"What?"
She pointed to his face and motioned for him to take a look in the reflection of the shop window.
He did and saw the metal grillwork of the cafe table he'd taken a nap on etched into his face. He groaned and tried massaging his skin back into place, but Ken laughed, taking his hand. "Leave it, it looks funny."
They walked for a ways before Ken's hand started to get cold, and Ayato took both of their hands and put them in his coat pocket.
"Spend the night at my place," he suggested.
Ken made a face. "I already told you-"
"Not to fool around or anything, Ken. My place is just closer. You can take my bed, I'll take the couch. Okay?"
Ken hesitated before nodding. "All right."
They got to Ayato's apartment a little before 11:30, and he opened the door, letting them in.
Ayato grabbed some extra pillows and blankets and got himself set up with the couch.
"Are you sure?" Ken asked. "I sleep on Hide's couch all the time..."
"Nah, you're good." He gave her a light kiss. "Go to sleep. I'll make you breakfast in the morning."
"Ah, your ulterior motives," Ken joked before going in his room and closing the door.
Ayato made her feel comfortable. Loved.
But she didn't tell him everything because he couldn't just listen. He always had to act. He'd get angry on her behalf and try to do something about it when all she wanted to do was move on. She couldn't tell him about her aunt, about her uncle, about Yuuichi.
Sometimes she just had to pretend around him, but she kept it up because he was supposed to make her happy, right?A/N: actually wrote this chapter and it didn't save...sorry for the wait
