Shuu sat across the table from a petite, dark-haired woman with narrow eyes and well-defined cheekbones. She was beautiful, really. Shuu just hoped she had a beautiful personality to match.
"I'm Marie," she introduced with a native French accent.
"I'm Shuu," he greeted politely, and she smiled.
"My mother is good friends with yours," she said as she sat down at the table of a cute little coffee-and-cupcake shop twenty minutes from Shuu's house. "She visits your mother every so often, and when she last went for a visit, she heard that her friend's son was in town, and...one thing led to another, I suppose, and here we are." She smiled before taking a sip of her coffee.
"Here we are," Shuu agreed, smiling. "I'll be honest. I only came at my mother's request."
She laughed. "I'm the same. I don't have much luck with these sorts of things."
Shuu smiled back, a genuine smile. "Me too. My last relationship...well, it didn't end well. It could have ended worse, I suppose, but it's no fun to go through all the work of a relationship only to end it when it doesn't work out."
She gave another small smile, but she appeared to be warming up to him. "I feel the same way. I've only been in a few serious relationships, and they were more trouble than all the little flings I've had combined. It's harder when you care, I suppose. Because then you start trying to make decisions for the both of you, only you overstep your boundaries, and it all gets messy."
Shuu nodded, frowning slightly before looking back up with a smile, prepared to say something pleasant, but she just shook her head.
"If you're sad, be sad. Don't put on a fake smile to make me happy. I'm already happy, and I'm even happier when my company is being honest."
Shuu sighed before smiling for real. "Thank you. For giving me the freedom to have emotions."
She smiled. "Thanks for not trying to flirt with me or use poor pick up lines."
They laughed and talked some more, and both of them left the café pleasantly surprised with the other.
