Mystification

It was quiet and dark in Merida's room. It was already midnight so everyone in the house was already asleep.

Merida too, was already lying on her bed, eyes closed and breathing evenly.

But she wasn't sleeping.

She just can't sleep. She's been trying for hours now. So many thoughts were invading her mind. She'd really like to sleep, though. Her body was so exhausted, she could barely feel it. But her mind just wouldn't let her sleep.

She sighed and opened her eyes. She sat up and stretched her arms to her side table to reach for her iPad. She entered her set combination and her screen unlocked. She frowned when she saw a still of Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable dancing. She must have not exited her video player properly earlier.

She tried not to think about the movie she watched earlier -- one of the reasons she couldn't sleep -- and went to iTunes. She put her player in shuffle and closed her eyes as the music started. She hoped this would lull her to sleep. She still needs to get up early tomorrow for archery practice.

It seemed like it was working. Merida was becoming more and more relaxed as she listened to The Calling's Stigmatized.

But then the song ended and Colbie Calliat's 'Realize' started playing.

Merida opened her eyes, wide awake.

She groaned, feeling she really wouldn't be having any sleep tonight. The song just reminded her of all the things that's been nudging her mind recently.

'All the things' pertaining to her best guy friend: Jack Frost.

They've been friends since Merida had found and helped a lost six years old Emma Frost at one of the playgrounds. Merida and her family had only moved in Burgess then. She had met Jack Frost then and became fast friends, but they've only became close when they both entered the same middle school.

They didn't enter the same high school, and they naturally grew a little distant. But recently, something changed. Ever since September of last year, she and Jack have been seeing more of each other. She didn't know how it started, it just did. Jack more often than not would visit her, and whenever she's free he would invite her to hang out at their home. Sometimes they would even hang out with his friends from school.

At first it was a little awkward because she felt a little left out. She was basically an outsider, as they were all classmates. But then she got close to them and started anticipating these friendly meetings.

And then the teasing started. Their friends just always imply that she and Jack are 'romantically involved' or whatever. And Jack would just go along with it! Laughing hard whenever they start teasing. They would refer to her as 'Jack's girl' or refer to Jack as 'Merida's b*tch.' Rude, but Jack definitely doesn't seem to mind.

And then there's these simple gestures he does. He had always been nice to her, but recently… his actions just doesn't seem clear; the reason behind them. And even his words… They just confused her.

It's been weeks since Jack had started going first to her high school after his classes so he could walk her home. It was very nice of him but he didn't really have to do it. What's more, his classes ends at around 4pm and hers usually end around 6pm so he'd have to wait for two hours for her. But he does it anyway.

And just last week when she was feeling down, he was just so sweet. She had called him and told him she just wanted to talk. She had seen a picture of her friends from Scotland together and it just made her sad that she wasn't with them. She told him she was feeling like she's somehow being left out because her childhood friends feels so far away now. And she wasn't even sure if they'd still remember her. She said when she left Scotland, she subconsciously believed that when she returns it'll all be the same. But after looking at the picture, she felt as if her world had stopped and her friends' went on with her not being part of it.
