The Ring

Warning: Jack and Merida are a bit OOC here, i think. :))

"Merida? Why are you crying?" Jack asked. It was their lunch break and he was playing a game on his phone when Merida entered their classroom, crying.

"Jack... the ring.. my ring... I think I lost it."

"Ring? What ring?" Jack asked, a little panicky. Merida never cried like this before.

"Mer!" Someone called from outside. It was Rapunzel.

"Punzie, my ring..."

"It's here! I found it!" Rapunzel said beaming. She raised her hand and Jack could see the diamond ring with 'Merida' written on the inside of the band. There was another word or maybe name, but Jack wasn't able to read it.

Merida's whole face brighten. She took the ring from Rapunzel and hugged her in thanks.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I'd lost it."

Rapunzel giggled. "I found it in Home Ec Lab."

"Oh. I removed it before we prepared the dough."

"Just take care of it next time okay? It's a very important ring." Rapunzel said.

"I will." Merida said hugging the ring to her.

Merida turned to Jack. "It's okay now, Jack. Sorry, I got a little hysterical."

Jack just silently shook his head. Merida smiled at him and left.

Only one thing was running through his head, 'What was that ring about?'

"Hey, I heard Professor Bunnymund proposed to Professor Toothiana!"

Jack turned to the voice, wide-eyed.

Could it.. could it possibly be an engagement ring? But from who?

No, it can't be. They're only 17 years old. No, Merida is just 16 years old.

But then again, isn't she sort of a direct descendant of the royalties in Scotland? If it's an arranged marriage to some prince-- 

'No. No. That's not possible.'

But for the next classes, Jack looked at his classmate's (the girls) hand and no one was wearing a ring, lest a diamond ring with their names etched on it.

Elsa was wearing gloves but he was pretty sure she wasn't wearing any ring either.

'What was that ring? Why is it so important to Mer?'

During their break, Jack silently watched the girls.

They were laughing and then Merida showed them her hand--her ring and they squealed!!

Jack could feel her heartbeat quickening.

Is it really an engagement ring? But he'd never heard anything about this! Weren't he and Merida close enough to be told about something this big? Or was that all him..?

"Yo. Jack, why are you spacing out?" It was Eugene.

"What happened? Are you okay?" Eugene said worriedly, now that he was closer. Jack's face must be showing what he feels inside.

"Merida… Mer... she's gonna marry someone... She's... She's..."

"What?? What are you saying, Jack??"

"Someone proposed to her! Before me! What will I do?? I'm not 18 yet! I couldn't possibly--"

Eugene then laughed.

"Jack! Are you dreaming?? Wake up!"

"Fitzherbert, I'm serious! What do I do?? I can't let anyone take Merida away from me!"

Strangely, everything seems to stop from that outburst.

"Ah, Jack?" It was Hiccup this time. And as if on cue, everyone started making noise.

Jack realized they were squealing and whooping and Merida face is as red as her hair.

And it hit him. He just confessed to the whole class.

He wanted to disappear from the face of the planet.

"Jack, what are you saying earlier?" Eugene said, laughing at Jack's expense. "Merida," he called. "did someone propose to you?"

Merida, red faced, turned redder and shook her head. 

"Where did you get that idea?" She managed to asked.

"B-but the ring..." Jack stuttered.

"T-the ring? It's given by Rapunzel. Punzie, Elsa, and Astrid all have the same as mine. Our names are also etched inside." Merida explained never looking away from the floor.

"But you showed to the girls earlier and they squealed and Rapunzel and Astrid aren't wearing--"

"I am." Astrid said then she took off her necklace.

Jack realized she was wearing her ring as a pendant.

"And I had mine in my pocket. I was in charge of the garden today." Rapunzel said and she took out the same ring from her pocket.

"I wore mine all along. But I guess you didn't see because of my gloves. And earlier Merida just showed us Rapunzel's drawing of Cinnamoroll on her hand. It was cute so we squealed." Elsa said chuckling a little. 

"That's a problem solved then." Hiccup laughed. "Jack, you still have time to propose."

"Yeah!" Jack cheered, not really caring about the others witnessing him like that. They already know, what more would he hide?

And if possible, Merida turned a shade redder. And the class's volume went up a notch.
