I wake up the next morning with a pounding headache that was most likely caused by my crying last night. I sigh and reach over to my bedside table for my phone. I have a text from Maya wishing me well and a million missed calls from Farkle. I decide to text back Maya first.
RILEY: Thanks for worrying so much about me! I hope you had fun last night and I promise I'm feeling much better
I send it off and immediately get a text back.
MAYA: Of course honey! I'm glad you're feeling better. I'll see you on Monday 😚
I send her a quick text in reply before beginning the debate about what to do about Farkle. I really don't want to talk to him right now but I figured I should at least let him know I'm okay.
RILEY: I got home fine last night. I'll talk to you later.
Before I can get a response I put my phone on silent and place it on my nightstand. I climb out of bed and head off to my en suite bathroom to take a shower. After the night I had I decide to instead take a bath and grab my favorite book from my shelf. I'm well into the third chapter of Sense and Sensibility when I hear a knock on my door. "Riley honey are you up?" my mom asks curiously.
"Just taking a bath. What's up?" I shout back.
"I made lunch and Lucas is joining us. I was just wondering if you'd like to come down."
"Oh. Um yea I'll be right down" I tell her before putting my book down and climbing out of my tub. I rush to my room and quickly sift through my clothes for something to wear. I guess this was what I got for sleeping in so late. I settle on a red floral dress that accentuates my chest and flares out at my hips. I throw my hair up into a messy bun to dry and call it good enough before skipping down the stairs.
"It was no problem at all ma'am" Lucas says politely to my mother as he drinks a glass of lemonade.
"Hi" I smile. Lucas' gaze lifts to lock on mine and a smile pulls at his own lips.
"Princess now that you're here we can eat."
"Where's dad?" I ask curiously, looking around the room. My mom's face falls and she begins wringing her hands and I already know the answer. "Nevermind" I say softly as I take my seat and place my napkin on my lap. My mom sets a BLT in front of me as well as a glass of lemonade. I thank her and dig in.
"How are you today?" Lucas asks while my mom sits at the table with her head in the clouds.
"I'm better. I just got an upsetting phone call from a friend back home" I explain.
"Somethin' goin' on back home?"
"No" I shake my head. "Um after lunch do you maybe wanna head over to the barn and talk?"
"Sure" he smiles. "I'd love to." We finish our lunch, thank my mother again and walk out to the barn. "Wanna sit on the bales or head up to the loft?"
"The bales are fine" I smile, jumping up on one and letting my feet dangle. "So."
"So" he replies as he sits beside me.
"If I tell you my secret I need you to promise me two things" I tell him, locking my eyes on his intently.
"Anything princess."
"One, please don't pity me. I've had enough of that to last me a lifetime."
