Theodosia's pov
I tie ribbons into my hair as mom had shown me to. They are a soft pink, as is my dress. I slip on my shoes, and head out. I walk uptown, getting my neighbours as I walk. Dad is discussing the revolution tonight with a group of his friends. When I walk into one of the shops, I look through their wooden dolls. I am much too old for dolls, I'm seventeen, but they are beautiful.
I'm observing one in my hand when a figure approaches me. I look up and see a young man with tan skin, deep, brown eyes, and curly black hair. He smiles at me.
"Hello. I saw you from across the store and thought I should come introduce myself." He grins a boyish smile and takes my hand delicately. "The name's Phillip Hamilton." He presses his lips to my hand.
"Theodosia Burr." I smile sweetly. This boy is very handsome, and seemingly outgoing.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintances." I giggle.
"Would you like me to buy that doll for you?" He asks.
"Oh, that's a very sweet gesture, but I'm only looking at them. " I shake my head. "I just think they are beautiful. ""Well, if you want to see something beautiful, perhaps you should buy a mirror." Phillip hums. I feel my face turn red and I look away.
"I have to go now, maybe I'll see you again? " I ask.
"Well, of course." He walks out of the store and heads to, where I suppose, is home.
Hamilton... why does that name sound familiar?...
I head home and mom and dad are in the living room.
"Do either of you know a family named the Hamilton's? " I ask. Dad's face scrunched up slightly.
"As in Alexander?" Dad asks.
"Maybe? There's a boy, Phillip. Maybe Alexander's son?" I ask.
"Yes. That's him. What about this Hamilton boy?" He asks.
"I met him today. He seems to have a thing for me. He was very kind and sweet and he's very much-" dad interrupts me.
"Trouble. He is very much trouble. He's most likely too outspoken life his father, whom is very problematic. I d-do not wish for you to see this boy. Dad tells me.
"But! " I look down. "Dad, I think I love him..." I sigh.
"Don't say that... you hardly know the boy. What if he treats all women like that? " dad asks.
"You were just like that at your age, Aaron. " mom reminds him.
"But..." he sighs. "Fine. Would you like to invite the Hamiltons over for dinner?" He asks me.
"Yes!" I grin. Dad gives me directions to the Hamilton house and I head to Harlem. I don't mind the walk, and I try and contain my excitement.
When I get to where dad had instructed me to go ni knock at tge door.
A few seconds go by and a woman with straight, dark, brown hair and a light blue dress opens the door.
"Hello." She greets me with a smile. "What brings you here, ma'am?" She asks.
"I'm Theodosia Burr." I introduce myself. "I met your son, Phillip today. And it turns out my father knows your husband, Alexander. So he'd like to invite you all over for dinner." I explain.
"Burr? Oh, you're Aaron's daughter! She grins. "Why of course, come on in for a minute and we can all head that way together. I'm Elizabeth, by the way. But you can call me Eliza."
I step inside and look around. It's a really cozy house, very nice. "Alex! Phillip! We jave a guest!" Eliza calls into the house.
Soon, a man that with dark hair and tired eyes walks into the room. Though he looks exhausted, he still has a look of wanderlust in his eyes. Next, the boy from earlier today joins us. His dark curls fall into his face and he sweeps them out of the way when he sees me. He smiles.
"Hello again." He greets me. I smile at him.
"We are going to Aaron's house for dinner. " Eliza explains. "This is his daughter... sorry, your name slipped my memory. What is it again?"
"Theodosia. " Phillip answers for me, with a smile.
"Yes, Theodosia." Eliza smiles.
"Well, lead the way."Alexander nods. We start walking back to my house, and once we arrive, dad stares down Phillip. Mom swats his arm for it.
Phillip and I sit outside, talking while our parents talk inside.
"It was a nice suprise that you showed up at my house. " Phillip smiles.
"I'm just happy the invitation was accepted." I giggle. "I was so nervous that you would have other plans.""What plans could I have that could possibly be more important that dinner with a wonderful lady and her family?" Phillip asks.
I blush and look down. "You're a bit of a flirt, aren't you?" I giggle.
"As was my father. And he won himself a wonderful woman that way. Maybe i can do the same." He hums."Theo, dear." My mom says through the doorway. "Dinner's done. Would you and your friend like to join us now?"
Phillip and I nod, and he helps me up. I dust off my dress and we head inside.Phillip and I begin hanging out even more after that night. One night, we meet in the gardens uptown.
"I cannot stay long." He sighs.
"Why is that?" I ask, raising a brow.
"I have to meet with a George Eaker tomorrow morning. And I must be on my way tonight if I plan to get there." He kisses my hand. "But I will return to you, I promise."
"What is the meeting for?" I ask.
"Well.. It's a duel. But I'll have ten seconds to prepare. It's plenty of time. And I can draw my pistol fast. I assure you, I'll be home." He hesitates before leaning in. I close my eyes and kiss him.My first kiss...
We pull away with a smile.
"I must go. Eaker will be waiting." And with that, Phillip leaves me to wait for him to return.
