TRIS

I hold Tobias's hand tightly, and he holds mine. We are both really nervous. Of course we are. Today is the day we are going to meet two people, the same age as us. Two people that in some way were not normal, and somehow, we have to figure out what makes them not normal. It's Evelyn's way of testing our Divergence... again. Erratic, curious Evelyn, with that sense of strength that lingers around her, the same that lingers around my boyfriend Tobias Eaton, who just so happens to be her son. Evelyn always gets caught up in her maniacal testing for signs of Advanced Divergence - the Divergents that have stronger and more enhanced genes. When we met the members of the Bureau last year, they told me that I was an Advanced Divergent (or AD) and that Tobias was not, but after Evelyn did some testing when the battle with the Bureau ended, she found that the results were inconclusive, and that both of us showed signs of AD and ID (Intermediate Divergence). Evelyn suspects that when Tobias is with me, and I am with Tobias, our genes work as ADs, and when we are alone they work as IDs. Tobias suggested it was our bond, which could be true, but I still think that's just corny.

We see Matthew, an escapee and traitor of the Bureau, walking towards us on the runway. He has just exited the jet, and two people follow behind him. A boy and a girl; the girl has fiery red hair and bright green eyes, whereas the boy is practically golden, with bronze hair and gold skin. Both are covered in strange tattoos which look rather similar, as if copied from a book, and they look very fierce. I could swear I see a glint of metal - a sword, maybe? - protuding from the boy's belt, but I guess it's just a play of the light.

Tobias squeezes my hand as he takes in the boy and the girl. They hold hands, like we do.

"Lovely, aren't they?" he says as he studies their scary expressions. I don't reply. I'm not really sure what to say, to be honest.

"Hi, guys," Matthew smiles. I can see his confidence growing as he becomes one of us here in Chicago. I learnt that this is the name of my city from the Bureau, in which Matthew was from. On first meeting, he was a small and scrawny scientist, forever put down by the manipulative David. When I killed David in the war, he began to come out of his shell. Now he is a smart knowledgeable man with plenty of confidence.

Tobias interrupts my thoughts. "Hey Matthew," he says. Matthew gives us each a warming grin, and gestures to the two behind us. The redheaded girl is staring at me intently.

"Tris, Tobias, meet Jonathan and Clarissa," he introduces.

The boy grimaces.

"It's Jace, not Jonathan," he says scornfully.

"And I'm Clary, thanks," the redhead says. She gives me a small smile. I smile back.

"I'm Tris," I say. "This is my... partner, Tobias."

The boy smirks. "You sure about that?" he says. Clary nudges him disapprovingly.

"I think so," Tobias says. "Seeing as she's going to marry me soon."

I glare at him. He promised not to tell anyone! Matthew looks at us in shock. Tobias goes red and murmurs an apology.

Jace chuckles. "Well, then," he says.

Matthew looks awkward. "Okay! Moving on," he blushes. "You four are here on Evelyn's request. You all know why, don't you? Right, good - I don't have the time to go into that."

He mutters to himself and hurries away from the runway, into the new Chicago airport. The old one was destroyed in the Civil War, hundreds of years ago. Recently they built a new one. Last year, Tobias and I had the pleasure of going on a plane, much to his dismay. I loved it, though.

I follow Tobias, who is striding ahead, away from Jace. I can tell he dislikes him straight away. Jace has everything that Tobias hates in a boy: arrogance, good looks and smugness. I mean, Tobias is good-looking, but he doesn't think so. And he certainly isn't arrogant or smug, so he can't be a hypocrite.

Jace and Clary follow a couple of paces behind. Clary is murmuring to Jace, and she has a stern look on her face. Jace is smirking again. Smirking seems to be all he does.

I enter the airport. It smells of wet paint and cleanser - a new smell, basically. I catch up with Tobias, and take his hand again. He smiles ruefully, and looks straight ahead. I suppose he feels guilty about what he said.

"Hey," I say softly. "Don't worry about spilling our secret. I don't mind."

"But you do," he says. "Tris, I'm sorry."

"It doesn't bother me," I say, half lying. It does bother me a bit, although I won't say that. "If anything, I should be happy. I'm sorry for being mopey."

Tobias grins, and stops walking. "Oh, Tris," he says, and touches his lips to mine. The heat of his soft lips sends a spark through me. I crush my lips with his, wanting more, but out of the corner of my eye, I see Jace pulling a face. I have to stop. He pulls back, red again, and continues to follow Matthew, still clutching my hand as Matthew walks back out of the airport and steps into the cab we hired that will take us back into Chicago.

I take a seat in the car. Sadly, we have to face Jace and Clary. It will be too awkward, so as they sit down, I look out the window, and think.

I think about how my old city was demolished by the remains of the Bureau - the people who betrayed David and his minions. It never had a name, or even had a country that we knew of, but it felt like the most real city to me. I was sad when they tore it down, brick by brick, and left it in a colossal smoking heap of rubble. It contained memories of my parents and Caleb, who all died. My parents died on the same day, one by one in front of my eyes, in the war against Erudite, but Caleb killed himself after he thought I was dead. He watched me take what he thought was death serum, but it turned out to be paralysis serum, cleverly dyed the same colour as the fatal stuff. I soon regained strength to find out he was dead. Even though he was on Jeanine Matthews' side, and he basically tried to kill me, he was the best brother I could ever have had. I still mourn him.

I realise I am extremely tired. I lean my head on Tobias's shoulder. He drapes his arm around my shoulder and kisses my forehead. Smiling, I fall asleep.
