CLARY

Thankfully, Jace pushed Evelyn away before she could sink her nails into his face. I mean, I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I can't believe Jace told Tobias about the Shadowhunters. I'm so angry with him at the moment.

Tobias, who is surprisingly strong, grabs Evelyn by the arm and pulls her off of Jace, who is momentarily stunned by the sudden violence that emerged from this old woman with no signs of fighting skills. Evelyn practically hisses at Tobias and tries to bite his arm, but he dodges it and slaps his hand over her mouth. She is shrieking at Jace, and I can hear her saying, "You ruined it! You ruined it!" I think she has actually gone crazy.

Tris is horrified. I'm not - I've seen possessed people worse than this, but I guess it's pretty scary for her seeing as she doesn't have much violence in her life anymore. Or craziness. Tobias holds onto his mother, calling for some of those weird scientists to grab a sedation serum. A girl with bright dyed-blue hair and wide green eyes passes Tobias the needle. He grunts and injects into her neck. The flailing about begins to slow down and soon she is unconscious. He carries her over onto the couch and lays her down gently. It is such a change to see her being so mental and then being so peaceful.

Jace comes over to me. He touches my shoulder lightly. I don't shake it off. I don't smile. I just stay indifferent, looking at Evelyn. To let him know that I am mega, mega annoyed at him. "Clary," he says. "I'm so so sorry. Listen to me. I had to tell him. Otherwise this would have happened, on a bigger scale, and it would not be pretty."

"I know that," I say. "I just wish you'd have consulted me before."

"I should have," he says. "But it was all in the heat of the moment, I couldn't not say anything. I'm sorry, Clary."

It's impossible to give in to him.

I turn around and kiss him on the lips. It's not fierce or passionate, it's just gentle. To say that I understand, and I do. He tries to push it further than that, and I pull away, as his hand touches my hip. "Later," I whisper, and go over to Tris. She has just been told about us by Tobias. He looks grave, for some reason. As if she'll go to the cops and tell them. She looks at me and grins, to my surprise.

"Demons, huh?" she says. "I thought Dauntless was tough." Tobias chuckles, and I smile. "Not a shock, then?" I ask. "I've had worse," she says. "I always knew there were monsters. Plus, I deal with things like this all the time. Not demons, obviously. I saw my parents die one after the other on the same day. That's pretty bad." She coughs, and looks at the floor.

"Sorry," I say quietly. She shakes her head. "Nah, it's fine," she says quietly. "I have Tobias. That's all I need." He smiles.

"Mr Eaton?" a small voice asks. The blue haired scientist is at the door, looking at Evelyn tentatively, and then her eyes flicker to me and Jace. He grins at her, and she looks away again. I roll my eyes.

"Yes?" Tobias answers. "Your name's Celeste, right?"

"Right," she murmurs. "Um, what shall we do about Ms. Johnson? Technically we have no boss at the moment."

"Go home," Tobias says. "Have the rest of the week off. All of you. I'll get Evelyn's lawyers to have a chat with you soon." He smiles, like a true businessman, and Celeste trots back into the laboratory.

"Next question is, what are we gonna do?" Jace asks. "Yeah, I know, I cocked all this up. I shouldn't have told you. We shouldn't even be here. It's against our law, and the Clave - our government - will have us all killed if we tell a single soul."

"We won't tell anyone, Jace," Tris says firmly. "If you don't believe us, I'll go to the Clave myself and swear on that Angel person in front of them."

"I know, I believe you guys," Jace says, softly almost. "It's just... Evelyn. She'll be worse when she wakes up."

"That's alright," Tobias says. "I didn't tell anyone this, because Evelyn ordered me not to, otherwise she'd never talk to me again. But Evelyn has a mental health issue. Sometimes she has breakdowns, like she did earlier, when things don't go her way. Believe me, this is the first time I've ever seen one. I'm sorry I didn't tell you this before, but I couldn't risk it - she always finds out. Anyway, Evelyn told me about this serum that she created that would brainwash someone of the past week. The problem is, we don't know when she informed your place of this experiment. What's the place called?"

"The Institute," I say. "And Evelyn got in touch a week ago today."

"Perfect," Tobias grins. "All I have to do is find the serum and inject it into her. Then we can tell her she was in a terrible car crash and she's been in a coma for a whole week."

This is working out better than I thought, I think, as I take Jace's hand.
