CLARY

I'm the one who has to get up out of bed and open the door for Tris and Tobias. Jace is sleeping like a log, and is taking up the entire bed, so much so, I literally got pushed off the mattress when I woke up to the sound of knocking on the door. I only have time to grab my robe and rush to the front door. Tris and Tobias are fully dressed, which is depressing - me and Jace are still asleep, and it's around ten o'clock in the morning.

"Hi, sleepyhead," Tris laughs, as they walk in. "You look like you just got out of bed."

"I did," I say, yawning. "You woke me up. Jace is still snoring."

"Whoops," Tobias says, but he is smiling wickedly.

"If it's alright with you," I say, "we're gonna go back to New York today."

Tris looks confused. "How? You haven't even got tickets," she says.

"In the Shadow World, we are able to use Portals, which will transport us to the place we are thinking of," I explain. "Thankfully I'm able to create a Portal from scratch. So we can just go whenever."

"Oh," Tris says. "That's... cool."

"And weird," I admit. "I'm sorry, I keep shocking you with weird facts about myself."

"No problem," Tris says. "Anyway, what time?"

"When Jace gets his lazy ass out of the bed," I say, making them chuckle

"Lazy ass is out of the bed, Miss Fray," Jace says, walking into the room. Perfect timing.

"Oh whatever," I say. "Get dressed. We're leaving."

"When?" Jace asks.

"Now," I tell him, making him rush. "Go pack and we'll use a Portal."

"Clary!" he hisses. I roll my eyes.

"I told them, for God's sake!" I say. "Go on! Go and get dressed!" With a lot of huffing and puffing, he goes.

"By the Angel," I say, exhaling.

"Wow," Tris says, laughing.

"Jace, can I use your stele? I left mine at my mom's," I ask.

"Tut, tut, Clarissa," Jace says, shaking his head mockingly. "A bit unorganised, are we?"

"Don't Clarissa me," I declare. "And yes, I was, for your information."

He grins at me, and hands me the stele from his boot. Tobias looks at it in confusion. "What the hell is that?" he asks.

"It's a stele," I say, helpfully. "You know these tattoos? They're called runes. We draw them on our skin with these things. They're copied out of the Book of Raziel, or the Grey Book - a Shadowhunter bible, basically. If you're super-awesome like me though, you can also create them. Each rune has a purpose. You can draw runes that will warm you up, or give you extra strength or something."

"Awesome," Tobias says. "Can I have one?"

"They don't work on humans, sorry," I apologise. "You'll die a painful death."

"Oh," he says. Tris smiles. I blush.

I focus on drawing this Portal. I focus on the shape, what it will look like, how successful it will be. Without even realising it, I finish drawing, and in front of me lies a perfect Portal. Tris and Tobias stare in shock.

"Good Lord," Tobias says. "That's... amazing."

"Why, thank you!" I say modestly. "Time to go, Jace. Um... Thanks a lot. For letting us stay here, and for all the food. I enjoyed it, actually. I know we didn't hit it off straight away, but I guess you can call us friends. We'll keep in touch. Thanks."

"What she said," Jace says, lazily. "And don't forget that promise."

"I won't," Tris says. "And nor will he." She gestures to Tobias. "Thanks for coming. It was a pleasure. See you around, guys."

"Bye," we say in unison. I think up a picture of the Institute in my head, and we disappear, into the Portal.
