TRIS

Clary and I carry the heavy grocery bags as we walk back to the apartment where Tobias and Jace are. I miss him a lot actually - although I've had fun, I haven't seen him since before lunch.

I hear a ringtone going off, and Clary stops in her tracks to pull her cell from her back pocket. She looks at it. "Jace is calling," she says, looking at it in confusion. "What could be wrong?" She presses a green button on the keypad and holds the phone to her ear. "Hello?" she says. I can hear a lot of babbling. Clary pales. "What do you mean, you told him?" she hisses. Told who what? Tobias? "So you're in his car now? Where are you going? Evelyn's. Okay. We'll be there as soon as possible. If this goes wrong, Jace, the Clave will intervene. You shouldn't have said anything. Bye."

"What's going on? Clary?" I ask. I have absolutely no idea what she is talking about.

"I can't tell you," she replies guiltily. "Not here and not now. Evelyn will explain when we get to her house."

"Evelyn knows? I really don't get it," I say, but to myself, because Clary is speed walking ahead of me. I can see the apartment from here.

"Drop the bags in the room and go straight to Evelyn's," she orders. I don't object - just do. There's no point arguing over something that I don't know about. I really do hope I'll understand everything in about an hour. I hate being oblivious to everything... It makes me feel dumb.

We enter the house and run up the stairs to the apartment. I grab my keys, unlock the door and literally throw the shopping bags onto the floor. Then we sprint down the stairs again after I lock up and speed out of the house. I'm glad we did lots of long-distance running in Dauntless, otherwise I'd be flat out on the sidewalk in five minutes. It takes twenty minutes to walk to Evelyn's from home, but ten to run if you're fast. Luckily, Clary is quick, so we reach her mansion briefly. Tobias's white car is parked on the driveway outside the door. When he recently turned twenty Evelyn gave him one of her old cars and taught him how to drive, much to his liking. It's lucky she gave him driving lessons.

The door so wide open. Clary and I go inside, into the front room, where Tobias, Jace and Evelyn are. Evelyn is stood up with her arms crossed, frowning. Jace looks as guilty as sin, and Tobias looks... firm. Like he did when he was my instructor in Dauntless. I haven't seen that expression since Marcus died. When we walk in both boys stand up. Tobias comes straight to me and gives me a warming hug and a kiss. "Don't panic," he whispers in my ear, and leads me to sit on the couch with him. Panic about what? Jace tries to talk to Clary quietly, but she storms past him and sits down angrily. I wonder what has happened.

"Tobias," Evelyn says. "What the heck is going on here? Why does Jace look like he's killed someone?" So she doesn't know either. Woohoo. I'm not alone.

"I know," Tobias says. He's talking nonsense. "I know... about them." He gestures to Jace and Clary. Then it all comes to me. Tobias found out who Jace and Clary were! That's a good thing, right? We passed the test. Well, he did. Not me. Yet. Anyway, why is everyone so tense?

Evelyn has gone white as a sheet. "How?" she asks, voice barely audible.

"He told me," Tobias says, looking at Jace.

"Okay," I interrupt. "Please explain. One of you."

"Hold it there - you, shut up!" Evelyn shouts, pointing at me. Excuse me? She just told me to shut up! What is her problem?

"Don't you dare tell her to shut up," Tobias says coldly and quietly. "Otherwise I'll leave this house with these three, and I won't come back. Do not take it out on Tris."

"Sorry," Evelyn says, although she doesn't sound it. "Do you mean to say, son, that Jonathan over here told you about their world? The Shadow World?" I have never seen Evelyn like this. Her fists are clenched and the skin is pulled so tightly over the knuckles, it has gone red. She is fuming, and her eyes are bulging.

"Yes," Tobias says calmly - an alternative to his angry mother.

"You," she snarls, and lunges at Jace.
