Two years had passed since Sammy had vanished. Sarah carried her Bendy doll everywhere she went. In second grade, she was bullied by the neighbor children. She often came home with bruises, but never told Henry.
Today however, there was no way to hide the black eye and swollen cheek.
"Sarah, what happened!?" Henry gasped, looking over every bluish-purple mark.
She shook, unsure whether or not to tell him what happened. Tears seeped through her clenched eyes. Hiccups erupted from her throat as she buried her face into his chest.
Softly, Henry rubbed her back to calm her.
"It's alright, you can tell me dear"
"The neighborhood kids have been picking on me. At first it was just name calling, then it got worse-" she was cut off by a harsh knocking at the door.
Henry answered it. It was the mother of one of the boys that tormented Sarah.
"Can I help you ma'am?"
"Yes, does Sarah Lawrence live here?" she snipped.
"She does, is there a problem?"
"As a matter of fact there is. The little brat attacked my son Simon. She scratched his poor little face" she pouted at the smug boy at her side who faked tears.
"Did you ever think to ask what he did to deserve it?" Henry saw through the boy's act.
"What? My son is innocent! I demand that the girl be punished for this!" she shrieked.
"Sarah does not commit these acts without reason. She came home with a black eye and other bruising. I suggest your son and the other children he was with, come and apologize for bullying her"
The woman was shocked and appalled by Henry's response. In a huff she grabbed her son's arm and marched off.
Henry closed the door.
"He said awful things about papa......that's why I scratched him"
"Like what?"
"He said that papa killed himself because he didn't wanna be with me anymore"
"Sweetie, you of all people should know that's not true. Your father loved you more than life itself"
"I know.......I miss him so much" she sniffled.
Henry finished dinner and the two of them spent the rest of the evening watching movies.
