Little Wolf (Book 1)

Border patrol

Hands touched my arms bringing me out of my misery, I kept my eyes lowered as so not to anger him anymore,

[Anger him anymore? Iona I'm not angry] he told me. My last alpha had been the same, well when I was younger, recently he didn't care. I already knew I was going to be beaten for some misnomer. Eli growled, "I am not going to hurt you Iona, neither is Luke or Matt. A true and good Alpha will never hurt his pack and Luke is definitely those things, hell I should know I grew up with the guy" he ranted a small giggle passed through my lips as he did that. His eyebrows raised incredulously, "Miss Williams did you just giggle at me" he asked innocently,

"Maybe" I said quietly, a grin spread across his face,

"Come on, shall we go back to the rest if the pack, I believe I was promised some food" he said wiping my tears and pulling me up. My wolf purred as he wrapped an arm around my waist, I frowned, I don't get why my wolf is acting like this. He led us into the other room where the rest of the pack crowded around our new Alpha, they were mingling nicely, I breathed slowly to calm my racing heartbeat. I pulled away from Eli, you know we should really call him Beta Eli, I reminded my wolf, Eli tried to wrap his arm around me again but i headed for the kitchen. Nobody was in there of course, since it was only the Luna and I who would be in here, and of course I was not deemed worthy to be anywhere near the Luna if the Alpha was around to enforce that.

Our Luna was the only women who actually cared for me, she didn't believe that I should be punished for my parents transgressions, she thought I should be nurtured so I don't make the same mistakes, of course she couldn't outwardly go against her mate and Alpha. I sighed as I looked what was in the fridge; not enough to cook for the whole pack, I leant on the fridge door willing some food to magically appear. None did.

"What you looking for?" asked Matt,

"Food, there's not enough to cook for the whole pack" I told him honestly,

"Why don't I help?" asked a women's voice behind me, I spun quickly. It was the women who'd asked about our old Alpha, "we have enough to make toad in the hole, and we have frozen peas" she said looking over my shoulder, I smiled,

"Ok then, shall we start?" I asked reaching for two aprons, a smile etched on my face. She took an apron from me as we began to set up I tied my hair up out of the way and washed my hands. She turned the radio on, "I've just realised, I don't actually know you're name, so um, what's your name?" I said, stuttering a little. She smiled,

"I'm Hannah, Alpha Lucas mentioned it, I think" she told me,

"I'm Iona" I told her, "I would shake you're hand but" I raised up two flourey hands, she smiled,

"I't fine" We hummed along to the music as we cooked. Cooking for the entire pack was a tiring battle, even though we're a small pack. The oven pinged, telling us the battle was over, I sighed as I grabbed a stack of plates to take through. No one was sat down at the dining room table, I groaned, the plates were going to go cold before I could muster everyone into the dining room,

[Need a little help?] asked Alpha Luke,

[Yeah, the food's going to go cold] I told him,

"Everyone, I believe food is ready, so go sit down at the dining room table" I heard Luke's voice from the sitting room, Hannah brought the toad in the hole's through,

"You plate up" she told me before going back to bring in the bowls of the peas. Everybody began to sit down, Luke waited till everyone was sat down before sitting down to the right of where I stood, he nodded to me to begin serving, which I did.

You had to start with the highest in the higherarchy, which of course was Luke, next the Beta, which was a little difficult because technically there were two Beta's at the moment, Eli and our last alpha's beta, I passed Eli his meal first but kept my face passive, this was the same problem with Luke's Third, but again I passed it to Matt. I contiued down to the end before serving my own portion of toad in the hole. The small conversations stopped as I headed down to my normal seat. We all waited for Luke to start eating before tucking in. The meal was delious to be honest,

"Thank you Hannah and Iona, that was lovely" said Luke from the top of the table as everyone finished, a small smile slipped onto my lips, I glanced to Hannah, who nodded. This was our signal to clear up, we both stood and started taking the plates away from the table, I sighed again before we started the arduous task of washing up. Finally we'd finished,

"Thanks for helping Hannah" I told her,

"Awe, sweetie it was lovely doing so" she pulled me into a hug, I stiffened immediatly, but sunk into the hug, and began to hug her back.

"Iona, could I speak to you" said Eli behind me, I pulled out of the hug quickly, I ducked my head and followed him, he led me towards the Alpha's office. I gulped as we neared, how many rules had I broken, I'd certainly had moment's where i hadn't refered to them as Alpha, Beta and Third, although you usually didn't call the Third 'Third Matt', it just didn't sound right. "You're not in any trouble Iona, Luke just wants to talk to you in private." He knocked on the Alpha's door,

"Eli, you know you don't have to do that" called Luke, "you're expected anyway", Eli chuckled, and opened the door, he walked in before me. This wasn't ungentlemanly conduct, it just made sense, if the woman went in first, the man couldn't protect her and Eli also had a higher rank than myself. "Hey Iona, there's no need to be scared or worried, it's nothing bad" Luke told me from behind the grand wooden desk, he was shuffling paper's this was so different to the Luke I'd got accustomed to, a strand of his inky black hair fell in front of his eyes.

"Why don't you sit down" he said kindly, reaching up and moving the unruly strand. I quickly sat down, "Now, onto business. Watching you interact over dinner and beforehand I've noticed that you are a dominant wolf, you care for the weaker around you but are not afraid to speak up, well, you speak up at least and others listen to your opinion, So, due to this and some other evidence, I want you to act as a temporary Luna to the pack. I know you're not my mate, and to be honest I'm not sure your mate would be too happy with this arrangement, but the pack needs a safety net, a women who will listen to their problems." I stared, shocked as he finished his talk. Me, dominant, temporary Luna?

"Really?" my wolf asked, "you aren't worried that I am an Omega?" she wanted to know, Luke smiled,

"Seriously, no I'm not worried that you were an Omega. You are the most dominant female in the pack at the moment, and so thus you need to be the pack's support till I find my mate," he explained, glancing behind me,

"Then yes, I'll act as your temporary Luna, but I'm not as dominant as you think," I told him honestly, I wasn't dominant, I could never stand against our last Alpha, when he hurt me. I gripped the arms of the chair as the prickling sensation feeling filled me, "Is that what you always feel?" I had to ask,

"You get used to it after a while" he told me, "and you can put a barrier between you and the rest of the pack, to blare out the ordinary thoughts and voices, anything of importance should go through" I nodded and quickly put up a wall, Luke nodded, "that's all I have for you, and thank you for taking up the position, even if it is a temporary fix" it sounded like I'd just been given employee of the month or something. A small smile appeared on Luke face, "or something, I think" he replied, my cheeks flushed red,

"You were'nt meant to hear that" I said pressing my hands over my cheeks. Eli growled behind me, Luke growled in responce, a growl climbed up my throat,

What the hell? I asked my wolf as I refused to let the growl go any further, He's acting above his station replied my wolf, I don't care, you've never done that before, I reminded her, she shrugged, They're still growling you know, and Matt can't do anything said my wolf helpfully, I snapped out of it, a huge growl escaping my lips. Luke's head snapped in my direction, I raised my eyebrows,

"You finished yet?" I asked, "Matt's looking uncomfortable" I told him, never looking in Matt's direction. A smile appeared on Luke's face,

"You passed" said Eli, behind me, my eyebrows furrowed,

"Pardon?" I asked
