I stared at Luke for a moment before piping up. Our gazes only broke momentarily throughout our whole conversation, quickly connecting again."So..." I had to think hard. "You're my stepbrother?" I asked.
"Yeah." Luke tried to contain a smile but the edge of his lips twitched happily. He sighed. "It's selfish of me to be so happy, isn't it?" He asked. I shook my head.
"Luke, you can't control how you feel. And, honestly, I would be happy too." I decided.
"Would?" Luke emphasized my choice of wording. "I don't think you understand that this goes both ways. I don't have to be the only one affected." He told me. "Are you happy?" He asked quietly. My head went down for a moment and I stared at my fingers as I traced the paths of the tabletop.
"Yeah... I suppose I am." That was something I hadn't realized.
"Tell me why." Luke encouraged. I looked back up at him.
"Besides the fact that I finally know what happened to you, my 'long lost brother.'" I grinned. "I'm just glad because I knew I felt something towards you. Some sort of connection. But it was too complicated for us to end up as a couple." I told him.
"I do love you, Madeline. Just not in that way." He told me. I nodded.
"I agree."
