I shake my head. "I didn't come here to steal anything, David."
For a fracture of a second, I think about turning around and entering the code. I think about the gun going off and me dying. It wouldn't be so bad. But then I see Tobias, and Caleb, and Christina. The few loved ones I have left. I think about me and Tobias' future together. These thoughts make it even harder to turn around.
But, I twist and I hear the gun go off. It hits a spot on the counter inches from my leg. I rapidly start punching in the code, and the gun goes off again. This time, it skins my arm sending searing pain through my body. I slam the green button down and lunge to the side, just as the gun goes off again. I feel a pain shoot through me, I don't know where. I regain my balance as my vision starts to go black around the edges. My ears ring, and I run at David. I kick his hand with such a force the gun clatters to the ground, just as it goes off. It hits the wall, and I attack him. I punch at his head until he falls unconscious, so I know I will be safe. I stumble back, and my vision fades. I feel my back slam against the counter and I slide down. Then, I see my mother emerge from no where. She is dressed in white, looking pure and heathy. She bends down in front of my face and smiles.
"Beatrice. You did it. You saved not only all of our city, but you risked yourself to save Caleb. You knew that you had a little bit of a chance to survive, and he had none."
"Mom," I let out a sob. I must be hallucinating. But I didn't care. "Am I dead?"
"Well, it's up to you. You could come with me. You would die, but you could be with me. And your father. You would see Marlene, and Lynn, everyone. You have completed your task. Or, you could choose to live. As much as I love you, people here need you too."
Christina, Caleb, and Tobias all pop into my head. I think of me and Tobias again. "Where was I shot?"
"A bullet grazed your arm, and one hit you on the right side of your back. But it's nothing you can't heal from."
I nod in response. I look up into my mothers face and see her smiling down at me.
"I'm proud, Beatrice. I'll love you no matter what."
"Mom?"
"Yes, Beatrice?"
"Is..."I hesitated."is it okay if I stay? I mean, Tobias. I love him. And Caleb, he would feel so bad. And Christina, she's like a sister. And... I love you so, so much. But I don't know if I'm done here."
She smiles."It would be fine. I love you so, so much. So does your father. We are both proud of you."
"I'm gonna miss you so much," I sob again, and my mother bends down to hug me, though I don't feel it.
"I'll miss you too, but I'll see you again when it's your time."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
"Thank you."
"Goodbye, Beatrice. I love you." Her image started to fade.
"Bye, mom. I love you."
I return to the room I am in, and see a pool of blood circling me. I try to get up, but pain washes everything in red and I begin to feel dizzy. Just then, Caleb runs into the room carrying a gun, and behind him is Cara. They run to my side, and I blink slowly as they lift me from the ground and rush me away. Everything goes black.
