Christina and I rode the train until we reached the old dauntless headquarters. I was confused at first, thinking the place must be deserted, but I followed her jump anyway.
We landed on the rooftop, and jumped one-by-one into the hole with the net at the bottom, just as we did when we first came to Dauntless. We walked into the Pit, and I was shocked by what I saw. There were people; lots of them, in and out of shops. It wasn't just old Dauntless, as we had eliminated the factions, but people in all kinds of clothing.
"What is this?" I asked Christina, not able to peel my eyes away from it all.
"It's where we go to shop. It's sort of a new thing. All different kinds of people come here for it; like all different kinds of people go to the old Erudite for research or to read or something," she responded.
"Wow," I started forward at a clothing shop, Christina trailing behind me. I pushed through racks of clothes, draping things I liked over my arm. Christina did the same beside me.
When I was finished looking, I took my second armful of clothes to the change room and set them on the bench with my first armful. I began trying things on, tossing stuff I liked into a pile, and stuff I didn't like into another. I tried on a loose, beige knitted sweater. It cut across my collarbone and hung a few inches below my belly button. It looked like something Amity would wear, but I didn't care. I tossed it into my "yes" pile.
I walked out of the change room with all the clothes I wanted to get and saw Christina sitting on a bench outside waiting for me. She had her own clothes, and once she saw me, she got up.
"I see you found some things you like," she smiled at me and looked down at my pile.
"Mhmm. Where do we pay for these?" Crap. I just realized something. "How do we pay for these?"
"Well, we're going to be paid in points again, but I don't have a job yet, and neither do you. So, we can pay for the things we can with our existing points, and put the rest on our tab."
"Alright," I plopped my clothes onto the checkout counter. The clerk looked up at me and her face broke into a huge smile.
"Tris Prior? The Tris Prior?" She asked excitingly. She was fairly old, probably around 60, and had grey hair with a few dark brown streaks left. Her face was wrinkled, but kind.
"Uh, yeah. How are you?" I asked, feeling a little confused.
"Oh, I'm fine, deary. How are you?" She responded.
"I'm doing okay. Keeping busy," I smiled a little at her.
She began ringing in my clothes and putting them into a bag. When she finished, she typed something into the computer and said, "I don't need to ask for your name."
"Yeah. I don't think I'll have enough points for all of this, so could you just put it on my tab?"
She looked up at me again. "No worries. You saved us all, you don't need to worry about the tab."
I glanced back at Christina, who was smiling behind me. "But..M'aam, that's a lot of clothes."
"Don't worry about it. In fact, you don't have to pay at all. Neither does your friend, there." She pointed at Christina behind me.
"Really, I would never be able to-"
"Don't worry. It's a gift. To say, thank you."
I hesitated before lifting my bag off the table. "O-Okay, If you insist. Thank you."
"Don't mention it." She put all of Christina's clothes into a bag and handed it to her. "Have a nice day, girls."
"You too," we called back. We walked out of the store, and I smiled. They are thankful. I made people happy.*******************
