We woke up the next morning, got dressed, and ate breakfast. We took everyone's lunch to-go, and went downstairs to the meeting place. Everyone was there by 9:55; everyone but Caleb.
"Tris, we should go. I don't think he's coming." Tobias says gently.
"No, he still has five minutes. He won't stay. He will come with us." I insist.
We waited five minutes."Tris, honey, let's go." Says Christina. She touches my shoulder tenderly, but I step free.
"Just a little longer. He will be here." My eyes are peeled, waiting to see him come around the corner. But he doesn't.
Another five minutes pass. "Tris, we need to go. He can come visit." Uriah suggests.
I look at them, then at the corner one more time. I stare for a second, then turn and push through the three of them to take the lead.
Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry. I think. He's not gone forever. You have Tobias and Christina, and Cara too.
We walk outside towards where the truck will be parked, and Tobias catches up to me.
"You okay?" He asks.
"No," My voice shakes a little, but I clear my throat to fix it. "I thought he would come."
Tobias stops in his tracks, and drops the things he's holding. Before I can ask what he's doing, he wraps me in a hug. I don't object, I just burrow my head into his chest and let him cradle me.
After about 30 seconds, we pull away. He gives me a soft, kind smile. Christina and Cara have reached the truck about 20 metres away. He scoops up his things, and we reach the truck and put our things in. I sit in the passenger side and Tobias drives, leaving Cara and Christina in the back. Tobias holds my hand while he drives, but the terrain soon gets too bumpy and he has to hold the wheel with both.
We drive in silence for most of the way. We pull over and eat in silence too.
It is around 2 I'm the afternoon when we reach the border. The officers stop us, to make sure we aren't bringing anything bad in before we continue.
We learn from the officer that everyone is scattered around, but we go to the Hancock building because that's where Christina's family and Evelyn is.
"Tris," Tobias says. Christina and Cara have already left the car, but we both hang back for a minute. He is still sitting in his seat, but his seat belt is unbuckled, like mine.
"Yeah?" I turn my head to look at him.
"I can't stand seeing you like this. It's okay, really. It isn't goodbye forever. It's not like you're completely alone, either. You have Christina," he looks over to meet my gaze."You have me."
I let out a sigh, and lean over and hug him. We pull away only slightly and he kisses me, gently.
Our noses are touched as he says,"I love you, but we should go. Christina will think we were kidnapped or something."
"Okay." We push open our doors and meet in the middle at the front of the car. His arm wrapped around my shoulders, we walk into the building.
Tobias steps up to the front desk where a man in a uniform and dark hair sits."Can you tell me what room Evelyn Johnson-Eaton is in? It's her son, Tobias."
"I'll have to buzz to make sure it's okay." He responds. He hits a button on his desk. A second later, Evelyn's voice comes through.
"Yes?" She says.
"I have a man here asking to come up. A Tobias?"
"Yes. Send him up."
"Okay,"The voice cuts off, and he turns his attention back to us. "Floor 5, room 21."
He gestures to an elevator to his right, and we go in. We hold hands, and the doors open onto the floor. He steps out first, acting eager. I'm glad he's eager. He deserves to be connected to at least one of his parents, after everything he's been through.
We reach her door, and Tobias knocks. Immediately, the door swings open and Tobias is surrounded in a hug. After a few seconds, she pulls away from him and hugs me. It was unexpected, and I was rigid at first. Then I remembered Tobias, and I knew I had to try; for him. So, I softened a little and wrapped my arms around her.
She pulled away and held me at the shoulders, beaming. "Tris! How are you?"
I smile back. "I'm good, how about you?"
"Great! Come in, you two, come in!" She urges.
She walks into the apartment, Tobias following her in and pulling me along.
She invites us and sits on the couch, and we talk as she offers us snacks on the coffee table.
"So mom, I thought you had to move out of the city?" Tobias asks her.
"Well he did, I'm only back for a few days. They made an exception, because we heard you were coming back soon from Christina's mom. I also needed to pick up a few things."
"Well, I'm glad I get to see you before you leave again." He says.
"Yes. I am afraid it might be the last time, too." Evelyn sighs.
"What? Why?" I felt him tense a little next to me.
"Well, I made a deal. No worries, Tris will keep you company." She moves her eyes over to me and gives me a smile. I return it.
"So you won't be coming back? Ever?" He asks.
"Well, hopefully for special occasions having to do with you. Like, your wedding, or the birth of your children."She flicks her eyes over to me.
"Yeah." He smiles.
We talk for a while, before Tobias realizes the time and how dark it's getting.
"We haven't found a place to stay, we really should get going." Tobias says.
"Well, I would offer for you to stay here, but there is hardly enough room. This is a one person apartment."
"That's okay, we'll figure something out." I say.
Tobias hugs his mother, and then she hugs me. We say goodbye, and he laces his fingers with mine. We go down to the lobby and head back to the truck. Christina and Cara are staying with their families, so we drive off towards the Abnegation sector. We will stay in my old house for tonight, since Tobias' bring back too many bad memories for him.
