What was there to say? My first best friend isn't who I think he is. Since I first met him, Leo always wore an impish grin on his face as if he was up to no good, which usually he wasn't. I knew very little of his past, but I never cared. I always thought he had a happy life.
Now that I see how he thinks of himself, it breaks my heart that I overlooked this. He thinks it was his fault that his mother died. Leo was just trying to protect her!
An imagine of Esperanza and Leo popped up in my head. She made a silly joke at Leo as he smiled widely from ear to ear, two small dimples on both ends. Why haven't I ever seen those before? I fixed my gaze on Nico who was staring at the now blank screen. There was deffiently something he wasn't telling us...but what?
Leo Valdez just stood there, staring at what was in front of him. Lucy, or as he liked to call her whenever she comes his way, 'please-don't smile-you're-making-me-want-to-throw-up-even-more-. It's-bad-enough-that-i-have-to-see-your-face-everyday'. However, Lucy never listened to him. She would always laugh it off and continue to talk about a choice he had to make.
My mouth fell open, giving me the feeling that I'd be doing a lot of that. "What's wrong with Leo? He's never like this." Asked a confused Percy. Annabeth seemed deep in thought as she was analyzing this new side of Leo, trying to come up with possible solutions to the problem. Hazel and Frank both frowned as well as Jason. What's going on?
The first thing that Leo noticed was the sweet smell of unnaturally green grass. Bright colorful exotic flowers covered the area as well as many edible plants. Two trees stood tall and proud, giving enough shade for the two story house behind all of that. The house was white with a freshly new coat of paint. Leo looked down at his feet and under it was a doormat that said, 'welcome' with a smilely face. The house gave the aura of a warm and inviting feeling in Leo's stomach. To anyone else it was paradise, but for Leo...
He absolutely despised it.
Almost everyone seemed to frown. "B-but it sounds amazing!" Hazel exclaimed. "Yeah. Why would anyone hate this! I wish I lived there when I grew up!" Percy said while Nico rolled his eyes. "Just...keep watching."
Leo remembered what had happened a week ago...unfortunately. After his Aunt Rosa left, Lucy came in with a smile, which soon turned into a frown when she saw Leo sobbing in the middle of the room. She carefully walked over to Leo and gently touched his shoulder. She wasn't going to ask what happened, so instead Lucy sighed. "Leo, since your only guardian isn't willing to keep you, than I'll have to put you in an orphanage."
So for one whole painful week, Leo spent it at 'Lupus home for the abandoned children'. There catch phrase said, 'smile and be happy' something Leo wasn't going to do anytime soon. When he was there, Leo didn't talk to anyone because all he did was stare off into space with tears falling down his cheek.
When Lucy finally cameone morning, she gave him an option. Wait till he got adopted in the orphanage or stay in foster homes were they could possibly adopt him. Leo hated the orphanage so, without thinking over it he went with the latter. And now that he's staring up at this house, the orphanage suddenly didn't seem so bad.
"Are you ready Leo," Lucy sighed obviously stressed out. She worked really hard to find a family willing to take him in. Leo shrugged his shoulders as he hugged his backpack containing his belongings which were: tooth brush, couple of old outfits, some bolts, rubber bands, a picture of his mother and himself and, of course, his mom's army coat. Leo didn't trust himself to wear it.
As he looked at the beautiful house, Leo suddenly remembered his apartment where he lived in with his mom. Sure it was worn down with some mystery animal running around, but it was HOME. Now, he can't go back. Not now, not ever. He hated anything thing that has to deal with any memories of his past and this house hits him right were it's still very sore.
