“Hannah and Kayla said they could go bowling on Friday. I'm gonna call Dana and Julie, now, to see if they can go." I said as my mom picked up her keys.
“'Kay baby girl." she said and left.
* RING RING *
Dana: Hello?
Me: Hey, Day! It's Lyndsey.
Dana: Oh, hey Linn! What's up?
Me: Can you go bowling with me and the girls Friday night?
Dana: Yeah, I'll be there.
Me: Okay I gotta call Julie now. See ya tomorrow.
Dana: Bye.
I hung up and dialed Julie's home phone. She broke her phone and is getting one next week.
* RING RING *
Mrs. Harley: Hello?
Me: Hey! It's me, Lyndsey.
Mrs. Harley: Oh, hello! How are you, dear?
Me: Good. I was wondering if Julie could go bowling with me and our friends on Friday night?
Mrs. Harley: Of course! I'll let her know!
Me: Thanks! Bye.
And I hung up
I drink my mug of hot cocoa and browse TV channels when my mom tells me to go to bed. I put my now empty cup in the sink and go to bed. Tomorrow's a big day. I think excitedly. Finally my fourth birthday. And I fell asleep.
My friends jump to my sides and throw confetti everywhere as I attempt to make it to first period.
Oh no. I think.
My friends start singing the birthday song and everyone looks at me. I'm covered in confetti and being followed by my loud obnoxious friends. and let's not forget they look like they're drunk, hanging on each others shoulders and stumbling over everything.
We finally get to my biology classroom and I put my stuff down. My friends laugh in victory of embarrassing me.
“Was that really necessary?" I asked laughing. I start picking out little shreds of rainbow confetti in my hair.
Today is going to be a good day. I think.
We all cheer for Hannah as she struts back to her seat making us laugh after she hits a strike. I stand up and smooth down my skirt.
“Watch how the master does it." I tease them with a smirk.
“Hope you're talking about me." I turn around to see a familiar face in the lane next to us.
“Ha! Yeah right!" I say sarcastically. He chuckles.
“Don't you ladies go to Wilson High?" he asked, picking up the bowling ball. That's when I noticed him.
“Wait! You're in my Science class!" I exclaimed.
“Oh yeah! Lyndsey, right?" he asked.
I nodded. “My friends call me Linn."
“Jason." he said.
I smile at him and we both go back to bowling. We both hit strikes.
“So are you guys just here for fun? Or is it a special occasion?" Jason says after we sit down.
“Yeah, uh, it's my birthday." I say blushing.
“Oh, cool!" he says before realizing what day it is. “Wait, so you were born on a leap year?" he asks surprised.
I nod, blushing. “Cool!" he exclaims.
I unlock my front door, my friends behind me talking about what happened at the bowling alley. I open the door and my friends throw their bags of supplies for our sleepover on my couch.
“I'm home, mom!" I call upstairs.
“Okay, honey! Cupcakes are on the counter. Have fun!" she calls back.
I hustle into the kitchen and grab the cupcakes and carry them to the living room. My friends clap when they see the tray of cupcakes I put in the center of the circle we formed.
“Wait!" Kayla says. She runs in my kitchen and comes out with a candle and match. She jabs the candle in the cupcake I put in front of me and lights it.
“Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear...." my friends chant together. I look at my candle and realize; none of my wishes have ever came true. Maybe it could be different this time. I think.
I smile and blow out the candle when they finish with one desire in mind:
I wish that all of my past wishes came true.
