Chapter 10: Surprise!
*Rrrrriiiinnng*
I slammed my alarm clock and this time I knew I had to get ready for school. My ironed uniform was just hanging on my cabinet and I already wore it after I did my daily morning routine. Jacob was not in bed and I didn't care. Today was just an ordinary day to begin with. While I was fixing my necktie, I noticed snowflakes falling from the window. The first fall of snow.
Downstairs, the kitchen was quiet and still as if nobody's around. I went to the dining table and found Jacob munching a peanut butter sandwich. Across him, there was a plate of blueberry pancakes. Suddenly, I wondered why didn't he argue with me early in the morning and why did he not have the same breakfast as mine?
"You're not eating blueberry pancakes?" I asked him finally.
"Oh, you're awake! Morning! Have a sit," he said. He sounded...distracted.
"G' morning," I sat on my chair. I munched down my blueberry pancakes but left one. "Here, it's for you! I pity you."
He looked up from his sandwich and eyed the blueberry pancake. "Gee thanks!"
"That's weird, why is he acting so boring and...nice?" I thought.
He ate the blueberry pancake as fast as he could to say, "Hey, you've gotta get to school right?"
My face saddened. Was he that eager to get me out of the house? I sighed, "Oh yeah, thanks! Bye! Will I prepare dinner later?"
"Nah," he said, not looking at me as he was gathering all the plates in his hands. "Bye!"
I walked out and took my bicycle with my heart that is aching with a reason I can't define. Snow has come. I forgot to take my scarf from my bedroom because I wasn't expecting that the weather will be this cold. As I was riding my bike, I saw one house that are full of kids in the backyard playing snowball fights with each other while the bus was waiting for them. "Silly, playful kids!" I thought and laughed at the same time. By the time I got to my class, Katie and Bethany were at their tables. They were whispering to each other and I think they haven't noticed me yet so I tickled Bethany.
"Hee hee! It tickles!" Bethany laughed out loud and looked at me. "Oh it's you Sammy!"
"Morning girls! What're you whispering about? Mind spilling?" I sat on my stool.
"Maybe later," Katie said. "Right, Bethany?"
"U-uh, yeah," Bethany tried to say.
What's with all of them today? Why are they acting so cold towards me? Have I done something wrong? The classes before lunch ended and I went straight to our lunch place which is on the rooftop because Katie texted me. But when I got there, I was surprised to see that no one's around. I called out but no one's answering. When I was about to head out, the door opened in front of me and Katie and Bethany were holding a cake with lighted candles.
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy biirthdaay dear Sammy! Happy birthday to you!" they sang perfectly, not a flaw in their tune. They were already excellent in singing since they were kids. Oh yeah, today's December 1st! Today's my birthday! I can't believe I kept on forgetting my birthday.
I covered my mouth with my hands as my eyes were filled up with tears. "Oh guys! I thought you hated me! I thought you don't like me as your best friend anymore!" I cried out.
"Oh, Sam! We're so sorry. I think I may have gone too overboard in keeping this a surprise. We're very sorry, Sam!" Katie said as she and Bethany hugged me after they put down the cake at a corner. They wiped off my tears using both of their hands as their eyes lit up and told me, "Make a wish!"
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "I wish Katie, Bethany and I will always stay as BFF. I wish that in the future, everything will be well. I wish—" my last wish was cut off because both of them whispered to me that it's getting cold and the wind might take my part in blowing the candles. So I blew the candles. We ate my birthday cake in the classroom as my classmates also greeted me. Some of them even repeated the birthday song for me. And it was all thanks to my best friends, Katie and Bethany. Classes ended and the three of us headed to work.
Manager greeted me and my other co-workers. They also gave me presents and birthday cake. That's when Katie and Bethany presented their gifts for me. Katie's gift for me was a keychain for my cellphone with their initials and mine. Bethany gave me a clothes in a paperbag. We were dressed in our Hello Kitty uniforms which are colored baby pink and with cute laces and pink ankle boots then we got to work. While I was taking orders, our regular customers knew it was my birthday and greeted me. Some even gave me tips. And I was really thankful. What stopped my heart for a second is the guy on our door. The same blonde haired guy who visited us last week. Jacob.
