Chapter 8: It's harder than it looks
I walked home in the shadow of the other apartments that lined the street. As I entered my flat, the only sound was my padded feet against the wooden floor and...uneven breathing? I glanced at the mirror on the wall and gasped when I noticed that my face was wet- from both sweat and tears.
I strode over to my kitchen and opened a cupboard above the sink, pulled out a kettle and began to make some coffee.
I changed into more comfortable clothes and stood against my counter with a mug in my hand, not allowing any guilty thoughts to enter my mind. Coffee was only one of my many ways of relieving myself when I get overwhelmed. I used to have an unhealthy obsession with it, but a month ago I broke it off and its results brought me to where I was now. As I leaned down to take a sip, the hot steam blew up in my face, clouding and un-clouding my vision at the same time.
I put the cup in the microwave and sat on the couch with my laptop- knowing I wouldn't be going to bed for now.
As I exited the large building, I breathed a sigh of relief, glad to escape the garrulous employees of the building going on about not seeing me in over a week and delving into my personal life as usual. I mentally crossed off collecting the cheque and all that was left was to go the bank and to the supermarket.
Three long lines later and a WHOLE lot of waiting, I was walking towards 'Harry's Alley' with two plastic bags in my hands. I peeked my head around the corner and saw Harry with his hands behind his head, leaning against the wall with his legs stretched out.
"Hi Harry." I waved at him timidly.
"Hi Soleil." He smiled widely at me and rose to hug me.
Once again I felt the incredibly uncomfortable sensation of hugging and I couldn't help but stiffen in his arms.
"So, uh...What's up?" Harry put his hands in his pockets.
"Well Harry I was thinking that I could start teaching you...?"
"Okay! That's good...good." Harry smiled at me again.
"You seem happy today." I commented.
"Well I got to see you again." The dimples in his cheeks started to show.
"So we'll be doing this for the rest of the day- If that's cool with you- so you could bring the kids- I mean I know you wouldn't want to leave them alone for the whole day." I shifted my weight from one leg to the other.
"That's cool. Thonks for caring."
I laughed.
"The first thing we do is teach you manners." I tried to stifle another laugh but it came out and soon Harry was laughing as well, holding Anna and Brit's hands.
I moved to lead the other two but Harry stopped me before I could.
"Uh, let me just tell them where we're going." He moved further into the alley so I couldn't hear what he was saying.
"Okay Daddy." I heard Andrew's small voice say to Harry.
I left my mouth agape and when Harry came over he asked if I was alright, but I reassured him that we'd talk about it later.
As we arrived at the apartment I decided to interrogate Harry about the 'Daddy' comment.
"I heard Andrew call you 'daddy'." I cut straight to the point, just closing the door.
