-Adam's POV-
I woke up, my wrist burning. What happened last night? I sat up and stared at my clock. Two? it was still dark outside, so I got out of bed to go get some water.
As I was walking down the marble stairs near the front entrance, I heard an odd sound.
"Jason?" I called out. Funny how the noise stopped and a questioning silence followed, and I then realized the noise was crying.
Jason was crying.
But where?
I pretended to walk back upstairs, and the sobbing resumed. I tiptoed around the kitchen. I knew I was getting warmer when I could hear loud sniffles under the table.
I looked under it, and saw him biting his wrist with his face contorted in anxious pain. No boy his age should have to suffer something like this.
"Jason, what hap-"
"Go away!" He cut me off.
"I'm not leaving until you feel better," I stubbornly proclaim, careful not to raise my voice in the wee hours of the morning.
"Adam...I don't want to see you right now. You seriously wouldn't understand."
My mouth got even dryer than it already was, and not because I was thirsty.
I walked over to the fridge and poured some water in a cup and brought it to my lips, but stopped myself. I walked over to Jason and handed it to him.
"You need this more than I do."
He looked up at me with warm tears in his eyes and rubbed the sad bite marks on his arm, which had now started to bleed profusely.
He drank the water after a little hesitation and sniffled. I sat down and rubbed his back. At first, he tensed at my touch, then relaxed.
"Can you tell me what happened?" I speak up.
His expression got firm and protective.
"No."
"Jason, we've been friends for the longest time. You can trust me with anything! I would do the same for you."
He got very, very quiet. Uncomfortably quiet. I wondered if it was about me...
No. I can't be so selfish.
I took in a breath to ask him if he would be alright, when I heard footsteps on the floor.
Jason jerked his head around, and I did the same. It was Mitch.
"What are you doing under there?" he asked.
"Oh...i-it's nothing. Go back to bed."
He shrugged tiredly and trudged back up the staircase.
"A...Adam?" Jason ventures.
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
My mouth was sandpaper.
