The next day, Damon, coming off a completely sober night, again faced his first opponent.
The match started.
The two exchanged both attacks and parries. Damon tried playing smarter, but the other man was reckless.
Damon moved his sword downward, parrying a blow aimed at his left knee.
This opened his upper body, though, and this was exactly what his opponent wanted. He took his right hand off his sword, clenched it into a fist, and rammed across Damon’s nose,
Damon fell, dropping his sword, and placing his hand his face.
His opponent pointed the tip of his sword at the fallen Damon.
Maurice, again, pushed through the crowd, told the man to go away, and knelt next to Damon.
“That’s three in a row, Damon. What in the Dark is wrong with you?” he said.
Damon removed his hands, and sat up. “I’m fine,” he said. “That was a cheap shot. I promise I’ll win the rest, okay.”
Maurice bit his lip. “Fine. But you better win.”
“I will.”
Damon lost the rest of the matches that day.
