My car bumped and bounced over the potholed road jostling my sunglasses off my nose. You would think for such a prestigious summer camp they would have better road care. My mom pulled into the grassy parking area.
"Okay pookie were here!" she said.
I flopped out of the car and my legs felt like a pincushion. I opened the trunk and lugged my duffel and sleeping bag out of the trunk. My mom believed that if you can pack it you can carry it. The check in station is always a bumpy hike down the gravel road, it is nearly impossible to drag your suitcase all the way down without something getting mangled may it be your pride or your luggage. We finally got to the multi purpose lodge. Luggage and other paraphernalia littered the front porch. And my mom said we were early. pft. We entered the lodge, it was a sea of parents and teenagers. Then i was knocked to the ground rather abruptly.
"HI!!!!" Meg yelled in my face. Meg is my best friend and also the biggest sport nut ever despite her health problems. "You finally got here! i have been waiting for hours!!!!" She always reminded me of a blow horn that had way too much sugar, but still, she is the best.
"Meg we have only been waiting 3 minutes." Bree pulled meg off me and helped me up. Bree is my other best friend though she is significantly older than me and Meg.
"Okay pookie, i have signed you in and i'm heading back home. You know the check in drill. Have fun Camper!" Mom squeezed me tight and slipped her annual last minute camp surprize in my backpack and left the lodge.
I proceeded to go through the mandatory photo, health screening, and t-shirt grab. As always I go through with Meg pleasantly grabbing my ear off about her summer. I can always count on her to cheer me up with her silly antics. Then finally we got to our dorm's meetup. I heard a familiar voice behind me.
"Cherry!"
I turned around and to my surprise, Elliot was standing before me.
"Hey, toothpick how you doing?!" I smiled.
He smirked. "Could you stop calling me toothpick, i have built up some muscle since we were kids." He flexed his arms.
"And cherry still makes sense?" I whacked him in the shoulder. Elliot and i have known eachother since we were little kids. His Aunt and uncle run the summer camp, so we see eachother every summer. He had grown a lot since last year, couple that with the fact i'm petite for my age.
" It's the memory that counts." He rustled my hat on my head. I hate it when he does that.
"Anyway, we're heading to our dorm. So If you wanna hear about mushy girly stuff, feel free come along." I fixed my hat and lugged my duffle bag over my shoulder.
"Oh would just love too, really would but i'm heading to my dorm, with them." He gestured over to the mob of guys next to us.
"Well have fun with that, see you at dinner." I waved goodbye.
Meg pulled me away and our consular Miss jewelia showed us to our cabin. This was julia's first year as a counselor she had been in the oldest girls dorm the year before so she was not much older then Bree. When we got to the dorm Miss Amy greeted us and handed us each a notebook.
"hey, ladies here are your camp diaries we are all going to write every day's events and thoughts for the extent of camp." Miss amy smiled and directed us to our bunks which were oddly on the second floor. Unlike in past years we were put in the remodeled section because we were new, but now we got the senior camper bunks in the rustic attic. I claimed the last bed without the bunk.It was next to the window with a slight view of the ocean. Meg grabbed a bottom bunk near mine for obvious reasons. It seemed like we were going to have the attic all to ourselves, then some other girls came in and grabbed beds on the other side of the room. They were the high maintenance types who would have wanted the refurbished high end down stairs. Meg and I knew this lodge was going to consist of screaming about bugs and how there hair is a mess. After that they went downstairs I pulled all the curtains open and the warm summer breeze blew the dust and stale air out of the cabin and my bed was bathed in the sun. I watched the clouds pass over the sky and there shadows washed over me. The distant scent of the sea air and the beat of the ocean on the beach had me mesmerized. The sky grew darker as the orange sun pierced the ocean's horizon and cast long shadows into the cabin room.
