The first lesson that must be learned

Is what to do with life's burns

They will happen inevitably

That is the elusive key

It is every generation's turn

To discover what to learn

Probably their parents knew it

Of course the children blew it

But mistakes are rarely learned from

Anyone else's being dumb

We must be stupid for ourselves

Have our own trophies for the shelves

Don't tell me what I must study

I myself know I'm ready

For anything that comes my way

Simply throw the rule book away

Confidence is a pretty thing

But arrogance will soon sting

There is nothing new to be done

But we insist we're like no one

Pardon me, I feel the need

To point out our folly and our greed

It's been said before, it's not new

But it's yet been heeded by so few

The point of the wise is to teach

And the point of the young is to reach

They can try very well on their own

But still appear with the wit of a stone

Learn how to live and learn to survive

History has shown us our drive

Make the mistakes you would regret not making

But please remember death does the taking
