Every man makes a cage for himself
The boundaries of his life
The boundaries of his thoughts
The limits to his actions
The limits to his beliefs
Some prisons are made of logic
Some are made of books
Others are made of gain
Each is made with words
It is our destiny
Our fate that we will cage ourselves
We call it law
We call it reason
We cannot be limitless
Or we would tumble over the cliff of gone too far
But I wonder
When there is no limit
How could we go too far?
I will build my cage
But I will build with that elusive material
The material of imagination
My boundaries will be my mind
My limits will be my conscience
Ethics is inevitably involved in every cage
Their limitation is necessary
So we will not stumble off that cliff
After all it is built
Into every cage
We cannot be limitless
I will be free
As free as my boundaries allow me to be
