Requested: Evan saves you when your date stands you up and y'all have a great time

-------------------------------

It wasn't supposed to be a huge thing. It wasn't like there were gonna be violins, or a serenade, or whatever, but it's common courtesy when you've got a date to at least make an appearance. Especially when that date was your boyfriend of a month and a half.

You sat at a table by yourself, silently munching on free breadsticks. You felt people staring holes into your head with unwanted sympathy and pity as the waiter approached you again.

"I'm sure he'll be here any minute. Please," you insisted, looking out the window. With a sigh, the man refilled your glass of water for the third time and let you be. Checking your phone casually, the lack of messages was discouraging, but you had hope nonetheless.

The door swung open, and the entire restaurant seemed to want a peek at who it was. The world seemed to come to a stop as everyone waited in anticipation. You could have sworn you actually heard a clock ticking somewhere in the background.

Realizing he was a stranger, you looked back down, pretending to take great interest in the cream tablecloth as your heart sank. However, the young man approached you anyway with an apologetic look.

"Goodness, honey, I am so sorry! Traffic was horrible!" He spoke clearly and a little loud. As he sat across from you, the atmosphere seemed to lighten up as people went back to minding their own business happily. Before you could protest, he leaned forward and lowered his voice.

"Hi, I'm Evan. Whoever stood you up is, well, a not n-nice person. Probably not very, uh, smart either," he nodded, smiling gently. You were still in shock, replaying the last minute on repeat in your mind. Everything was happening too fast for your liking.

"I-I'm [name]," you muster. "But my boyfriend is going to get here soon enough, and you can't be here when he does,"

"See that Pottery Barn across the street? I've been watching you suffer from behind the counter since you g-got here," he admitted meekly. "So let's just get some food, and laugh a little, and just forget about the expired coupon of a guy that stood you up, okay? How does that s-sound?" Evan exhaled with a grin.

You nodded reluctantly, and couldn't help but smile as he began rambling about the ravioli at the restaurant. He was good looking, admittedly, and definitely about your age. After a while, the rest of the noises faded away, and it just seemed to be you and a friend at a table.

------------------

"You're kidding me!" You covered your mouth, stifling an obnoxious laugh.

"Nope. W-wish I was," Evan chuckled, leaning back in his chair.

"But Jared said-"

"What Jared says isn't always what he means," he shrugged with a smile, shoveling another forkful of pasta into his mouth.

You'd been exchanging stories all night, and becoming acquainted with his misadventures. Everything had seemed so vivid as Evan described it, from the Connor Project to the orchard he'd revived as a result.

"My life seems so boring compared to yours. You've gotten more action in this past year than I have my entire life," you admitted.

"Well, it isn't all great. I'll t-tell you that much," he shook his head. "Kinda stressful, a-actually. Then again, when you're me, what isn't?" Evan chuckled nervously.

"There's nothing wrong with that, Evan," you reassured him. He became visibly happier again. Mouthing a "thank you",  he bit his lip as he searched for something to say.
