by the campfire

I threw the bag of marshmallows at Shawn, and he caught them in one swift motion. He smirked back at me and I rolled my eyes, picking up two skewers. I decided it'd be a good idea not to throw those. I sat down between Shawn and one of his friends, the chairs forming a circle around the fire.

A mix of Shawn's and my friends sat in the chairs, chatting and roasting marshmallows. I caught the eye of one of my own friends, and she winked at me. I raised an eyebrow, but she giggled and joined back in on a conversation with the boy next to her.

I shook my head, turning to Shawn. I handed him his skewer and he bowed his head.

"Why thank you, m'lady."

I laughed, grabbing the marshmallow bag from Shawn. I impaled one with the skewer and held it above the fire, Shawn following suit. I turned my attention away from the fire, looking at Shawn.

He'd already been looking at me apparently, because my eyes met his. The warm fire reflected in them, the orange glow casting strange shadows on his face. He smiled and leaned in, wrapping his free left arm around my shoulders.

"You know what Matt said?" Shawn asked, referring to his friend who sat a few seats away from me. He smirked, tilting his head.

"Enlighten me."

He chuckled, a sound I'd come to love. I blushed whenever I made him laugh, and I could feel my face already heating up. At that moment, I was thankful for the dark, orange lighting that would hide—oh, he's talking.

"Sorry, what?"

Shawn shook his head, smiling as his eyes sparkled. "I said, Matt and a few of our friends made a bet."

"Yeah?"

"About us."

My eyes widened. Did he know? I bit my lip, letting my eyes wander away from Shawn's face. Our friends always teased us and made jokes about how we acted like a couple, but Shawn and I always denied having feelings for each other. I didn't think anyone knew I was lying about that.

I cleared my throat, "Wh-what do you mean, 'about us'?"

"They made bets on how long it'd take us to kiss tonight."

My head snapped back to level with Shawn's. While I'm sure great shock was expressed on my face, amusement was written all over his. "Um—"

"Matt wanted me to do him a favor," Shawn looked down at his watch, then scanned the circle around the fire until his eyes landed on Matt. He grinned, "He betted for just about now."

Is he saying what I think he's saying?

Shawn angled himself towards me, beginning to lean in. I had a split second to think about whether I wanted to do this.

Obviously the answer was yes.

Our lips met, Shawn's arm that had been resting on my shoulder pulling me closer. My surroundings disappeared and it seemed that Shawn and I were the only ones in the world. His lips were soft against mine, and I could sense him smiling into the kiss.

"Shawn! Y/N!"

We pulled apart instantly, managing to knock foreheads. I rubbed my head, sheepishly smiling at Shawn. He bit the inside of his cheek, the corners of his mouth turning up.

Matt looked at us from across the fire. He winked, "Your marshmallows are burning."

I looked towards the fire to see our marshmallows both engulfed in flames, melting and dripping into the fire below. I pulled mine out, flicking the marshmallow off the stick and towards the fire pit. Shawn did the same, then grabbing my hand.

"C'mon," he stood up and I followed him into the house. I'd forgotten who it belonged to, just that he was one of Shawn's childhood friends. He led me into the kitchen. Shawn began looking in the fridge, probably for a drink, and I hopped on the countertop, swinging my legs back and forth.

Shawn grabbed a bottle of lemonade and shut the fridge door, opening the drink and taking a sip. Then he walked over to me, setting the bottle near where I sat.

"So," he started.

"So," a mischievous smile curled on my face as I wrapped my legs around Shawn's skinny torso, letting my arms fall over his shoulders. One of his hands cupped my cheek while the other found its way to the curve in my waist, resting above my hips.

"I believe Matt interrupted something."
