chapter ø ▹start ~~~~~
When most people hear a crying baby, they usually think it has a guardian to hush them. People don't think past that point. People don't assume that it is a baby with no guardian, left in the alleyway of Queens, New York.
Most people hear a crying baby, pay no mind to it, and continue on their way. Why did one man stop and enter the alleyway?
The baby was left with few belongings. The pale pink blanket wrapped carefully around the infant, and a chocolate brown teddy bear, that the infant was gripping harshly.
When the man reached towards her, the baby screamed louder.
A roll of paper was tucked into the blanket. The man managed to grab the paper without getting hit by the flailing teddy, and smoothed the paper out.
Madison-Sadie was all it said, the rest was unreadable and scratched out. He scooped the baby in his arms and walked the last three blocks to his apartment.
He laid the girl on the kitchen counter, and rummaged through the cabinets to find a syringe. When he located the syringe, he placed it next to Madison-Sadie. The syringe was filled with a clear liquid, but he couldn't see very well without his glasses.
The man left the kitchen to go wash his hands and gather the needed materials. When he came back, the syringe was stuck in Madison-Sadie's arm, and the liquid was pushed into her bloodstream. He carefully removed the needle and Madison-Sadie quieted.
He brought a jar of pale pink liquid and extracted all of it with the syringe and pricked Madison-Sadie once again. Madison-Sadie squirmed in pain and let out a deafening, high-pitched scream. The noise ceased.
The man pulled out a voice recorder and spoke into the speaker, "Patient X1000, failed first injection. Compare to other X-ranks. All noise has silenced, has passed at, 11:39:05-"
He was cut off by the sound of sniffles coming from Madison Sadie. "Correction: Patient X1000, has passed first injection. Compare to other X-ranks. Minimal noise, passed at 11:39:05 AM ET, and rose at 11:39:08 AM ET."
He clicked off the recorder and stuffed it into his pants pocket. He turned around and faced his only patient that survived. One intense staring contest later-which the infant had one-, the man knew he was going to experience hell.
