"A party? Really?" I ask bluntly through the phone. Does Nina seriously expect me to go to a dumb high school party with her after everything I've told her?
"Think about it Mae, you've been to hell and back over the last few months, you need a distraction, something fun and normal. Sitting at home watching Netflix is not a life, you need to get out."
" I wasn't actually watching Netflix I was reading." I say in attempt to argue back with Nina.
"Reading is just Netflix for old people."
A smile creeps its way across my mouth
"I'd take it any day over your stupid party." I say trying to sound firm."I can hear you smiling Mae Anderson."
"It's Jenkins now remember?"
"I take your lack of argument as acceptance that I'm right." She says triumphantly, there really is no point arguing with her.
"Fine." I say with a sigh, "but we're only staying for an hour at most."
"I'll take it!" This time I can hear her smiling, "I'll pick you up at eight o clock sharp.
"No! Wait! Nina, I need you to come earlier, to help me get ready, I have no idea what people wear to these things."
Nina laughs down the phone at me,
"I'll bring a few outfits in an hour, I doubt you own anything that a nun wouldn't wear."I would be offended but it's probably true. My old school had a uniform, which means my closet is embarrassingly bare. I never went to anything that could be considered an actual party. I usually spent my evenings and weekends lounging in my dorm wearing my comfy clothes so unless I want to wear a pants suit I bought for a mock interview at my old school or a baggy hoody and leggings, I literally have nothing to wear.
An hour later Nina rings the doorbell exactly 17 times. I groan as I force myself to leave the comfort of my bed to answer the door.
Nina stands on the front step holding a ridiculously sized duffel bag proudly.
"Nope" I say before letting her in.
"I'm not trying on that many outfits.""They're not all clothes" she says rolling her eyes and pushing past me.
"Hey is Samantha home? I haven't seen her in literally years.""Nah she's out meeting some friends for the evening."
"Even better." Nina says whipping her head around and wiggling her eyebrows at me.
"Your such a freak." I say with a laugh and lead the way up the stairs.
Nina unloads the contents of her bag on my bed, my jaw drops at the sight of the skimpy clothes she pulls out along with an excessive amount of makeup.
She holds up a short sand coloured skirt and a tight looking crop top.
"These would look ok on you I guess""Your kidding right? There's hardly anything there?!" I say horrified.
Nina laughs,
"I swear to god Mae if you thought you could get away with wearing one of your granny outfits you have another thing coming.""I wasn't gonna wear a granny outfit....just something maybe a little less revealing?"
Nina and I spend just under two hours arguing about what I should wear, finally we comprise on a decent length pink leather skirt and a Lacey top that's not too tight but tight enough to see a bit of my figure underneath.
Nina convinced me to let her do my makeup, so long she doesn't make me look like a woman of the night.
After 20 minutes of Nina poking me with random brushes and pencils, she pulls back with a smile.
"Definitely an improvement." She says cheekily with a wink.
I stuck out my tongue at her and turn towards the mirror, I am surprised to see that I don't look half bad, I might go as far as to say I look good, I look like an older better looking version of myself, and I'm ashamed to admit that I actually like it.
Nina convinced me to wear heels, they're only two inches, but they do make a huge difference to how I hold myself, they make me look way more confident then I feel.
Nina walks out of my ensuite wearing a tight wine coloured mini skirt and an off the shoulder crop top with four inch heels. Suddenly I feel really self conscious. It occurs to me that I look like a kid playing dress up next to her.
"All set?"
"As I'll ever be." I say nervously.
"It'll be fun I promise." She says putting an arm around me, a gesture that's supposed to be comforting but really just makes me feel about twelve years old.
"One hour tops." I glare at her.
"You'll change your mind once were there." She says with a wink and starts toward the door.
I sigh and take one last look in the mirror before following her.

We pull up to the party in Nina's crappy old Nissan micra which she insists is easily the best car on the road.
From the outside the party doesn't look like much. The curtains are closed with dim light filtering through them onto the lawn. The only thing that really gives away the fact there's a party on is the thumping bass vibrating through the air.
" You'll be fine, trust me." Nina says noticing the panicked expression on my face.
I attempt a smile but whatever my face does, doesn't feel much like a regular smile.
Our heels clack steadily toward the house and I feel that all too familiar ball of nerves form inside me.
The beat of the drums feels as though it's travelling through me, a sensation that I've only ever felt as a kid when the marching band played at the Fourth of July parade.
The atmosphere in here is electric, scary yet exciting.
"Wanna dance?" Nina shouts into my ear.
I nod and we make out way towards the makeshift dance floor, a room cleared of furniture with a DJ and his deck at the back.
I start to relax a little and let myself be guided by the music like a puppet being pulled in by the infectious beat of the drums.
Nina leans into me, "I'm gonna get a drink, want anything?"
"Anything without alcohol if there is such a thing." I reply, without stopping dancing.
Nina rolls her eyes and pushes her way through the crowded room of drunks.
Maybe this isn't as bad as I thought it would be, it's actually kinda fun, but as always in life, the fun doesn't last long.
