We tried getting home. We really did, but no one would answer. It was like they were all vacated somewhere.
We were all upset. Except for me, I don't care where that old hag went. She was finally gone.
Dean, who was sat beside me, had been looking down at his shoes for the past 10 minutes. His expression was blank. What was he thinking of? I barely talk to him, even though he's been with us for at least two years. I can't believe I know almost nothing about this guy.
I start, "Hey, so I know I don't know how it feels, but you know, we're all here for you dude."
He looks up at me. "Thanks."
I give him a nod and a patient smile. He returns it, then goes back to thinking.
We're by the entrance of I-195 E, just waiting for the smallest sign of life. So far, nothing. Had the whole world just suddenly disappear and forgot about us? What was happening?
I turned on the radio, moving from station to station, but there was only static. Until we got to one frequency that was broadcasting an emergency warning.
Dean's head shot up. He fixed his glasses which were resting on the tip of his nose and listened to the message.
"It is the 22nd of October, 2017. A virus has just spread from the CDC facility in Baltimore, Maryland. All residents to report immediately to the nearest airport."
"Airport huh?" Dean mused, "Where to?"
"Only one way to find out," I responded.
I turned the engine on and called to the back that we were about to move. We entered the interstate, driving along the clear roads that were once busy.
I glanced occasionally at Dean. He was now looking out the window in a trance, like before. I've been looking at him for too long. Shit. I have to look away, I'm not looking at the road and I seem like a creep.
From the corner of my eye, I saw him smirk. "Take a picture, it'll last longer."
I slowed the car down and got my phone out. I snapped a quick picture of him, then I went back to driving, leaving him dumbfounded with my previous actions.
I glanced at the rearview mirror and saw Venice grinning at me and giving me a thumbs up. I playfully glared at her and went back to driving.
"Take the exit here," Dean says as he pointed to the lane on our right.
I obliged without question.
We took a different way to Baltimore-Washington Airport. Dean seemed to know his way around, so I decided to make him my personal navigator.
A really cute personal navigator, that is.
Oh crap, what am I thinking?
I looked at the reflection of the rearview mirror again. Everyone seemed to be doing okay. The aftershock of us being left behind had passed and everyone had regained their conscience back.
The airport came into view, but it was...different. Terminal 1's roof had a huge hole in it, like one that was caused by a bomb. I felt sick in my stomach, was anyone killed? How was the bombing not in the news? If it happened a few hours ago, then there would still be fires and we would've heard the explosion.
Everyone was looking as well with confused, yet terrified expressions. Suddenly, home didn't feel so safe anymore.
I saw Seryana ask Venice a question, but the look on Venice's face told me that the answer was not a good one. Seryana sat down, expressionless. I wonder what they were talking about?
I turned the vehicle towards the airport. I parked it right in front of the doors, since the whole damn city was deserted anyway. When we entered the place, It was, unsurprisingly, empty. No staff, no people, no signs of life. Oddly enough, the lights were on, and so was the air conditioning. Everything electrical was running.
Who was running them? Who left them on?
"Confused?" Seryana asked, resting her arm across my shoulders. "We all are. Don't worry."
I gave her a small smile. Somehow, her words were reassuring, even though they weren't what I was expecting. We all went our separate ways in the huge building. I decided to go check out the destroyed part of Terminal 1. Dean and Violet decided that they'd go the in the same direction.
When we got there, the place was a mess. Loose chunks of concrete were all over the floor and there were still some metal bars hanging from the ceiling above.
"Watch out," Violet said, pointing to the ceiling. "They may fall."
I hadn't even though about that.
I spend the rest of my time there paranoically checking above my head every few seconds to make sure I wasn't standing under a falling piece of metal and die after it hits me.
Suddenly, the sound of metal hitting the ceramic floor echoed through the room. I froze, so did Violet and Dean. Then we heard it again. I decided to check it out.
Turns out, behind a pillar was a guard. He had been pierced by a sharp metal pole though his right shoulder and was sitting down, leaning against the pillar. His blood was trickling down a steady stream, pooling on the ground below him. I winced.
He gestured for us to come closer with a shaky finger. I almost felt bad. I felt weary of this stranger, but we all inched the slightest bit closer.
"It was the Russians," He whispered.
