The Russians, huh?

None of us were really surprised. The Soviet Union was probably one of America's greatest rivals.

"Can we all agree that this is Trump's fault?" I asked Dean and Violet.

They nodded their heads. We headed out the wrecked Terminal and rounded everybody up. There was no escape for us right now. We had to go to another state. New York was basically the center of everything, but in order to get there, we'd have to take a day's break.

We would probably stop somewhere back in Ellicott City, then in Philadelphia. I certainly did not want to be driving at night since the sun was setting already. It would take us 3 and a half hours to get to New York, whereas Philly would take us an hour and a half since the roads were clear. I also did not want to find out what was out there with my friends fully vulnerable in the back of my truck.

They were my priority right now.

We got back to the truck and we quickly got on I-95 North. I sped up, but not too fast since I had people in the back. I stole a quick glance at Dean to find him putting his phone close to his ears.

"Who're you calling?" I asked.

"My parents. I almost forgot we had our phones," He responded.

He groaned when nobody picked up. He ruffles his hair, something he barely ever does, in frustration. I almost felt bad.

Focus on the road, Lexi.

~

I was exhausted. Today was one hell of a day. Reuben, the only other person who had a driving permit (not that it matters anymore since the law doesn't exist anymore, but really, we needed people who could drive) took over as I climbed onto the back, letting Dean stay in the passenger seat.

Safe to say, he was a shit driver. Not saying that I'm not a shit driver because I probably am, but damn.

Jace was gripping the side of the vehicle until his knuckles turned white. That was how scary it was.

"Does anyone else know how to drive? No rules or anything, I just need someone who knows how to drive straight, unlike my sexuality, and know the controls," I asked.

Seryana raised her hand. Whoa. Seriously, this girl had a lot of surprises.

I told Reuben to pull up on the side of the road because we were changing drivers. Dean snorted at Reuben and he glared at him.

So, I end up falling asleep in the back, curled up in the corner like a damn log. I remember looking at the setting sun with it's strikingly bright colours, Dean's loud and obnoxious laugh at some joke Seryana had told him, the McDonalds burger we stole from a random pit stop on the side of the interstate, and the smooth metal of the back of my truck.

Ironically, it was beautiful, despite being in an apocalypse.

~

The first thing I saw when I woke up was that we were in front of Reuben's house. Venice was still here; she was the one shaking me awake.

"Hey, wake up," She says gently, "We're here. Reub's dog was left behind, he's kind of pissed."

Then we heard a loud crash, and someone yelling in the house.

I huffed out a laugh, "I think 'kind of' is an understatement."

Venice nodded. "You're right. Let's se what's going on."

Venice went on ahead first. I jumped out and landed on my feet. I looked up at the house, then noticed something odd; the power was working. How?

I brushed that off, just glad that we found shelter. I turned to my right to look down the street, and saw a black silhouette of a man. I squinted, trying to make out who it was in the dark. They seemed to have a limp, and was walking in a very odd way. The sight of it gave me chills, so I turned away and walked into the house.

There was yelling in the kitchen, obviously coming from Reuben. I peeked around the wall and I saw that Violet was just sitting at the counter, listening to her boyfriend ranting and nodding occasionally as Reuben seemed as if he was having the time of his life. He yelled something I couldn't make out, but he was pointing at his dog, so I figured that it was still about that little fur ball.

I made my way through the living room where Jace and Mike were playing Call of Duty (with a lot of yelling) and the dining room where Seryana and Venice were eating some food.

Then finally, the back yard.

I probably enjoyed that part of the house the most. We've all been here countless times, and it was always as fascinating as the first time we saw it. There was a porch with a roof on top after the sliding door to get to the yard. Lanterns were suspended in the air from the branches of a tree, lighting up the area. In the centre was a fire pit, I guess we could hang around there a while. In the left corner closest to the door, there was a veranda. A table and a few chairs were placed under it, but we could move those out for shelter if we were going to camp out here and it rained.

Yodeliene came into the backyard with a box of matches in her hand. She lit it, then threw it into the fire pit, igniting a fire that would soon grow bigger to provide us with warmth. She gave me a small wave, which I return, then she went back into the house, and I sat on the grass close to the fire.

We all gathered out back. Reuben got us some marshmallows to roast, but of course, we had something to properly eat. Sadly it was nonexistent, due to Seryana and Venice consuming all of it. It was okay, we cooked more pasta to resolve the no-food issue.

Tonight is the night we redefined our legacies.
