That night, I decided to talk to Ji-eun about us. I knew that what she felt about our closeness was not just friendship but more than that and I admit I led her to that more-than-friends kind of emotion.
I was wrong to think I would be able to get over Dara and that my feelings for Ji-eun could eventually progress to being more than just friendship. I thought it would be that easy. I was almost there.
But having the issue of Dara's safety made me realize I really won't be able to let go. I am Dara's safety shield. She needs me more than anyone around her and I need to be right beside her to make sure she won't be in danger.
"Jiyong... I was about to call you to remind you of our lunch date tomorrow."
I was in the living room, staring outside the window, when I called Ji-eun.
"How was your errand?" She asked.
"I have to talk to you about something." I told her.
"What is it? Are you planning to change the time of our date?"
"Ji-eun..."
"What?"
"Where should I start?" I stopped, trying to organize what I have to say. "What we have... I know we have something... We click together and... I like you. I got attracted to you because you're kind and fun to be with... and I enjoy going out with you."
"So?..."
"But... There's something that I need to take care of... and I don't think we can still continue with what we have because of that."
"What are you talking about, Jiyong?"
"I don't think I could still go out with you?"
"Why are you saying this? All of a sudden you're calling me to say these things."
"It's hard to explain, Ji-eun."
"Are you saying you're done with me? You're no longer having fun so you're opting on putting me aside and adding me to your list of women you've played around with."
"That's not true, Ji-eun. I've never intended to play with your feelings."
As if not listening to what I was saying, she said, "You didn't even have the decency to tell me this in person."
"I know it's not right for me to tell you all these over the phone... but I don't know how I'll be able to explain in person."
"Just when I thought you're different from other guys."
"Ji-eun, I know you won't understand but I'm in a situation right now where I have to choose between someone's safety and my private life."
"And you chose to throw what we have away."
"It's better this way, Ji-eun. Believe me."
"You've found another woman, haven't you?"
I didn't answer. I didn't know how to respond to her question.
"I hope not to see you anymore, Jiyong. You have broken my heart. You really did."
"I'm sorry, Ji-eun. I really do."
I no longer heard anything else from her after the last thing I said. She ended the call.
Putting my phone inside my pocket, I turned around only to be startled after seeing Dara standing right behind you.
"Ji..."
"How long have you been there?"
"I'll talk to her. You don't have to do that." A tear rolled down her cheek.
