*Chapter Twenty*  ~Hard Exterior ~

Weeks have passed now, maybe even a month. I haven’t seen Damian at school or anywhere, I haven’t heard from any of the brothers. There hasn’t been any trouble either; I haven’t had any guns pulled out on me in a while.

I haven’t talked to Lola; she has avoided me as much as she can, and that is one of her best qualities, the ability to ignore.

I walked down the hallway, clutching my books to my chest. Everyone smiled at me and nodded but none of them held any interest for me. I didn’t feel as though I knew any of them, even though I grew up with every single one of them.

“Hey Aria” One of the boys called out to me “Some detective is here to see you.”

I groaned as I walked over to the room that he pointed at. I entered an empty room, with only Roland sitting on a table, wearing the same suit he wore last week.

“What do you want Roland” I said with no emotion.

“Where’s your boyfriend?” Roland asked. “I know you know where he is. He has been off the grid for the last month.”

I shrugged “I don’t know. Is there anything else?” He got off the table and came closer to me “What happened to you Aria? You used to be so-“

“Normal” I finished the sentence “Yeah, I know.” I turned away from him “I really got to get to class.”

“Why did you tell Lola?” He asked me, stopping me at the door.

“Are you asking as a detective or an ex-boyfriend” I asked.

“I’m asking as brother.” He replied “She’s my sister and you told her without asking me. Why?”

“Because I don’t want to lie anymore Roland. I can’t okay. I can’t lie to my best friend anymore” I admitted.

Roland sighed “Just let me know if you hear anything from Damian.”

I nodded before walking out of the class room.

“Just the person I wanted to see” Jay called out to me from across the hallway. I put my finger on my mouth, telling him to be quite. I grabbed him by his arm and dragged him into a random empty classroom.

“Roland’s here, asking questions about Damian” I told him.

“Damn” Jay sighed “Okay well right now we don’t have to worry about that.”

“Why?” I asked confused. “What are you even doing here?”

“I came to talk to you” He told me “Damian is- busy right now so I am watching over you”

“Busy?” I asked. Jay nodded “He’s been out of the city for the last month and I am here to –“

“Babysit” I finished.

“Protect you” He altered the sentence. I rolled my eyes “Well I’m a big girl, I don’t need protection anymore, and I have lasted a month without any of you three brothers, so I think I’m okay.”

“Yeah well you don’t have a say in this” He replied with slight anger.

“Honestly Jay, without you three my life has been normal okay, I have to deal with this life after you three have gone. So why can’t you just let me deal with it now. I’m getting over it.” I explained.

“Getting over it?” He asked “Really because you look like shit Aria, have you even been sleeping?”

“I’ve been fine” I replied harshly. He was right; I hadn’t been sleeping, every night I stayed up, making sure everything was okay, making sure that Nick was okay. I was too worried about where Damian is and if he’s okay. If I had to make a guess about where he went, I would say Liverpool, to find his family. I know that wouldn’t be safe for him, it would dangerous and scary. I was scared for him. The last conversation we had was just going around and around in my head. I know he will come back, until he knows I am safe, so why do I feel like this? Maybe it’s because it is a taster for what is to come, maybe this is how I am going to feel getting up every day for the rest of my life when he actually leaves.
