Chapter 40 - The Final Chapter

The final Chapter

 The engagement party

I stare at myself in the mirror as people rush around me trying to get me ready for the party. Hundreds of people wait for me downstairs.

“Hey” I hear Damian’s voice. I turn around to see him leaning against the door frame. My heart beats fast when I see him. I turn back around as I reply to him “I thought you left”

“I did” He replies. I gesture for everyone around me to leave, allowing Damian and I our space. They close the door behind them.

“Damian why are you here? I’m getting engaged today” I say, my voice quiet.

He nods as he comes closer “I came to wish you good luck”

“Good luck?” I turn to him “Are you kidding me?! Damian we were so completely in love, to the point that you PROPOSED to me and now that there is a bump in the road… you’re done?”

“Bump in the road? This is more than a bump in the road! This is friken mountain Aria; you are going downstairs to get engaged to someone else”

“You say it like I have a choice” I stand up abruptly.

“You do.” He says “Run. Run away with me now”

“What?”

“That’s what you said the day your father told you that you had to marry John. Remember? Let’s just do it. Let’s run” He puts his hand out.

I shake my head “Do you remember what you said?” I sigh “I’m sorry Damian. I have risked enough people. I can’t risk anyone else”

He nods understandingly and steps back “I’ll see you at the party”

I sigh as he walks away. Why can nothing ever go right for Damian and I? Why can’t we be a normal family?

Everyone claps as I walk down the stairs; I look towards my father who smiles. How can someone be so heartless to his own daughter? He’s trading me… he’s trading his own daughter.

Next to Tony stands John who smiles at me, I look over and see Damian and for that second I think about his offer… I could run away with him, we would spend the rest of our lives on the run but being together… that is all I’ve ever wanted.

He shakes his head slightly, knowing what I was thinking and gestures towards John. I look over at John and then back to Damian.

“The rings please” John asks, I am handed a ring and so is John. John looks up at me and I force a smile. As I hesitantly place my left hand in his, he puts the ring on my finger. The crowd applauds, and then he puts his hand out.  I hesitate for a second longer than I should have.

“Aria” John whispers in a low voice.

“Sorry” I shake my head, I put the ring on his finger quickly.

Tony steps forward and addresses the crowd “Thank you for coming today everyone. As you know, I am going into business with John and by a beautiful miracle, he is marrying my daughter.”

Miracle? I had to force myself not to scoff at his words.

He raised his glass “To the happy couple”

Everyone joined in “To the happy couple”

“Ah also” He adds “The wedding will take place a week today.”
