(a/n: this chapter is going to pretty short, just wanted you all to know.)
It all started once my English teacher, Ms. Clements announced those words to the class; we were all going to be assigned a 'pen pal.' I'd always thought about having a pen pal - when I was six.
"The sheet of paper I'm giving you is your pen pal for the next two weeks. You will learn at least five things about them, and five things you have in common. If you fail to do those things you will guaranteed fail for this semester. There will be absolutely no switching," She explained to everyone. My classmates looked down at their pen pal they've been assigned to.
I glanced down at the one I received; his name was Isaac, and we were the same age. He lived in a place called Beacon Hills, California. I lived in New Hampshire, so it was far in a way.
Pulling a sheet of paper out of my blue-striped folder I wanted to get a head start on the assignment. He probably won't even be that interesting, I instantly thought. But whatever.
My cerulean pencil glided across the paper as I wrote down things about me first, then adding some questions along with it.
Seeing that you're my new 'pen pal' now, we basically have to learn a couple things about each other. First off my name is Valencia, and I am from New Hampshire. Not much to do here, thought. I bet it's better in California where you are.
I have two other siblings; one older and one younger. My brother Drew is the older one and my sister Hayden is the younger one. Like typical siblings they annoy me constantly. I wonder if you have any siblings?
I am very obsessed with the color blue, ever since I first time I saw it I fell in love with it even more. We all have obsessions, right? What are yours?
This should be a good start to our two weeks ahead of us. I really hope we get to know each other better. :)

p.s. - i hope i don't sound weird at all to you. i might sometimes :(
I placed the letter into the folder and then shoved it back into my backpack. (Yes, that's blue too.) The sudden ringing of the bell signaled it was next period. It was my free period, so I decided to spend it revising my first letter. I didn't want it to be perfect, nor did I want it to be non-presentable. Especially to someone I didn't know.
Stepping into the library I located an empty computer and placed my stuff down beside the chair in front. I went to grab a pen when I bumped into Cole, Hayden's boyfriend (who apparently still tries to hit on me.)
"Hey, you." He said while propping his arm up on the nearby counter top. "For the one hundredth time, I don't want you, Cole. You have Hayden." I proceeded to head over to where the pens were when he stopped me.
"I'm not gonna ask you out. I just need advice,"
"If it's dating advice then no."
"Please, Val. I need your help, it's urgent." I sighed. "Fine, what?"
"It's about Hayden. Our two month anniversary is coming up and I don't know what to get her." He ran his hand through his brown hair. "Okay.. but it's been two months, do you not know what she likes?"
"Yeah, but I don't-"
"Get her something she likes. Like a book or something. She loves those. Now, let me get back to what I was doing." I walked around him to grab a pen and go back to the computer.
"Thanks for the wonderful advice!" Cole sarcastically said after I walked away. "You're quite welcome." I gave him a smile before turning towards the screen.
thank you so much for reading the first chapter of this story. i hope you all enjoy reading it as much as i enjoy writing it :)
