Right when Nicolette walked through the front door the first thing she said was, 'Can I see the letter?'. Since I wanted her to stop begging me for it I passed it to her. I watched as her eyes scrolled up and down the paper.
"Aww. He really likes you!" She exclaimed, her grin a mile long. "I wish a certain someone would say things like that to me," she mumbled under her breath. For the past two weeks she's been on and off about her boyfriend Tristan. They were on and off for a while, till they finally decided to get back together. Now Nicolette's steady complaining about the decision she made.
"I've never had a boyfriend before so I don't know what it's like. Try one of those sites that give you advice, like Buzzfeed or something. They have really good dating advice."
"I'm not thirty years old, Val."
"Then try looking something up. If you don't know ask the internet," I put the letter down. "Anyways, did you hear about what happened in California?"
"No, what?" Nicolette wandered over to the sofa and plopped down in a spot. "A video store clerk got murdered, and apparently they had slash marks over their chest. Like if they were from an animal's claws."
"I don't think an animal would have attacked like that, unless if it was really, really ticked off." She pulled out her phone. "Isn't California where Isaac lives? But where exactly in California?"
"Yeah. Beacon Hills. that's where it happened." Dropping her phone out of her hands, she looked at me shockingly. "Wait, what if it was a werewolf?"
"Nic, that's just stupid. You know there's no such thing as werewolves - like there's no such thing as Bigfoot or vampires. They're all just a bunch of myths."
"I mean, seriously!"
"There's no wolves in California!"
"There might be! Especially werewolves. Maybe Isaac's one.." My fear of the supernatural washed over me. "Stop, just stop talking about that! You know stuff like that scares me." My fingers tangled in my hair.
She stopped and looked down. "Sorry, I got kind of.. carried away. It might be my cue to leave. My mom wanted me home soon, anyway." Standing up and grabbing her phone, Nicolette approached the front door - whipping it open. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" I silently said.
"Yeah, see ya." She shut the door behind her and I sighed.
. . .
- friday, lunchtime -
I headed to my usual table in the back corner. It was quiet and peaceful - well, at least not today. I had just sat down when I looked up to see Nicolette and Tristan arguing for at least the third time today. I don't know why they even bothered to get back together. They both already knew it wasn't going to work. The last resort was to break up for good, but they both feared that next step. It's like they're stuck like glue to each other, but struggle to let go.
"You were the one that wanted to get back together in the first place!" Nicolette shouted, grabbing the attention of many other students. "Me? You were the one that came crawling back to me!" Tristan shot back. After that, they continued to go back and forth.
"I don't even know why we're still together. You're just a little kid when it comes to relationships! You act like a sick, little child!"
"Are you kidding? You're the one who's the sick, little kid! You complained about every time I wanted to talk to my friends, and you want to call me the little kid? Think again." I watched as Nicolette gave him a deep, dark glare before storming out - only her heels clicking behind her.
I always told her getting back with Tristan was a bad idea, but she never listened. Look where's she's at now.
